Convincing win for Cogan Coro Reserves

TONGWYNLAIS RESERVES 0 Cogan Coronation RESERVES 5

COGAN reserves travelled to Tongwynlais for their first game of the season. With a strong side, they were full of confidence and it showed from the off.

Cogan flew out of the traps and it didn't take long for the midfield of Lee Reynolds, John Coombes and Matt Whitcombe to get control of the game, while Dinky and Mike Large on the wings were causing all sorts of problems with their balls into the box.

Chances started to come thick and fast and it was only a matter of time before Cogan broke down the hard-working Tongwynlais defence.

Coombes played a great through ball for Scott Muir, who had his shot well saved but it landed at the feet of strike partner Lewis Humphries, who with still a lot to do, squeezed the ball through a crowd of players to give Cogan a much deserved 1-0 lead.

Cogan then eased off, which allowed Tongwynlais to start creating their own chances, but skipper Gareth Woodhead, Kevin Clarke and Sean Golledge at the back dealt with any problems to ensure Cogan went into the break leading 1-0.

Cogan couldn't have started the second half any better and five minutes in Scott Muir was put through on goal by Humphries only to be brought down in the box for a penalty. Scott got up, dusted himself off and tucked it away confidently.

He soon got his second when a corner was headed onto the post by Lee Reynolds only to land at his feet 2 yards out, for him to put it in the net.

Cogan were well on top and Tongwynlais were praying for the final whistle, but with 25 minutes to go Cogan made it 4-0. A pinpoint Dinky corner was met wonderfully by Kevin Clarke at the edge of the box and it looped over the keeper and into the top corner.

Cogan manager Dean Ford then introduced veteran Mark 'Podge' Herniman for the tiring Dinky. He nearly made an instant impact with a shot that was well saved by the home keeper.

With 5 minutes to go Muir deservedly got his hat trick when great play from Golledge down the wing allowed him to get his cross in, which was flicked on by Podge for Scott to finish at the back post.

The final whistle went with a convincing 5-0 win for Cogan. Man of the Match was a hard choice, with two main contenders, but was given to Kevin Clarke.

Cogan Coronation would like to thank Penarth Motor Company, Crest Nicholson, CASS Hire & Sales and all sponsors for their continued support.

All three senior Cogan teams are home, Cogan Rec, on Saturday, September 15, ko 2pm.
