PENARTH discus thrower Brett Morse picked up another title on the weekend, as he sets his sights on competing at the London Olympics in 2012.
The former St Cyres pupil won gold at the British Under 23 Championships in Bedford on Saturday, and in doing so almost certainly booked his place in the senior squad for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India.
The ambitious 20-year-old was named Welsh Junior Athlete of 2008, and has captained his country on several occasions.
His personal best of 59.52m already beats the Commonwealth Games qualifying distance – and means he is only a further two metres off the Olympic standard.
“The winning throw at the Beijing Olympics was 68 metres, so that’s the benchmark,” said Brett, who is studying Sports Development and Coaching at UWIC.
“Everything’s geared to the London Olympics now.”
Brett’s mum, Lisa Cavanagh, is looking for sponsorship to help her son realise his Olympic dream.
Lisa said: “Brett’s doing so well, he’s exceeded all expectations.
“He’s only two metres off Olympic standard and has three years to get it.
“We need to find a sponsor or sponsors who can help him get there.
“Brett’s a Penarth boy so it would be great if local businesses could back him," she added.
“Ideally he needs to be somewhere like Eagle Rock in California, where all the top discus throwers train.
“We do what we can financially but Brett could do with more help.
“I would hate to think that a lack of funding might hold back someone who has a great chance of doing well at the London Olympics.”
For details about sponsoring Brett, call him on: 07717 437670 or Lisa Cavanagh on 07548 391951.
