COGAN CORONATION 6 CLWB CYMRIG 4
COGAN Seconds continued their march in the Lord Ninian Cup by disposing of League 1 rivals Clwb Cymrig, in what can only be described as the worst playing conditions seen for a long time.
With torrential rain and a horrible playing surface, it was down to Assistant Manager for the day Robbie Gillies to ensure the boys tried to play the simple, effective football which has been their trademark under manager Podge this season.
All credit to the boys – they played the best they could given the conditions, and it was no surprise that a wonderful passing move ended with ageing midfielder Peewee Reynolds sliding in unmarked at the back post to open his account for the season.
This should have been the catalyst for more goals but full credit to Clwb Cymrig, who drew level after the Cogan defence let in the centre forward and he made no mistake, sliding the ball beyond goalie-for-the-day Heath Pearce.
Straight from the kick off Cogan regained the lead with club top scorer Dan Humphries continuing his purple patch, restoring Cogan's lead with a neat finish, and his customary Rhino Hunter celebration.
Once more Clwb Cymrig hit back and more sloppy defending allowed them to draw level and go in at the break level 2-2.
The second half was a different affair with Clwb Cymrig taking the lead, and this was to be a test of character for Cogan, which they responded to.
Lewis Humphries pulled the team level with what some experts described as a contender for goal of the season, hitting the ball in from some 30 plus yards after a mistake by the Cymrig goalie.
Still Clwb Cymrig came forward and took the lead again, and the normally reliable back four of Woody, Sean, Dave Murray, and Boopa had conceded four goals for the first time this season.
With time ticking away Cogan had to find an equaliser, but were frustrated in their attempts, twice having what looked like good goals disallowed.
Their pressure finally paid off with a penalty being awarded for hand ball and up stepped young Bradley Munn to coolly beat the keeper from 12 yards, to continue his impressive record of never having missed a spot kick.
Extra time was the order of the day, and it was down to Robbie Gillies to rally the tired troops, and inspire them – and this he did, as Clwb Cymrig had no answer to Cogan, and they duly scored two more goals, one each coming from defenders Woody and Boopa. This was a great victory for Cogan and moves them into the fourth round of the competition with their opponents yet to be decided.
With many regulars absent due to first team call-ups and mid-season vacations, a special mention must go to all 12 players who played in terrible conditions – in particular Mark Eley, Michael Large, Lee Williams, and goalkeeper Heath Pearce, who stepped in at short notice and kept the team in the game with some fine saves.
With players always ready to step in, it bodes well for the future for the club.
The 2nd team management would also like to thank Lisa Ryan, Ceri Dibble, Nicola Charles, and all the kids for decorating the club for the excellent Halloween Party, and a mention also to hosts for the evening Lee Williams and David Dibble, who are being touted as the next Jon and Edward.
