A WHO'S who of local talent will be battling it out for your nominations for the 2009 Vale of Glamorgan Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
Organised by volunteers from the Vale District Sports Council and supported by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s sports and play development team, the annual ceremony will be held in spring 2010.
But now is the time to put forward your suggestions for those who deserve recognition!
There are 10 categories and you can nominate either elite performers who have made the headlines during 2009, or individuals and teams who are making a big impact on the local sporting scene.
For example, it could be a coach who is achieving excellent results against the odds, or a volunteer who goes the extra mile.
All nominees must either be from the Vale of Glamorgan, currently live here, or represent a team or club in the county.
The categories in full are:
Senior male
Senior female
Junior male
Junior female
Unsung hero
Disabled sportsperson
Team of the year
Performance coach
Community coach
School of the year
So it’s full steam ahead for this year’s awards, but the organisers are appealing for sponsors to come forward to support the event this year and in the future, and ensure that the final whistle isn’t blown on the awards.
Vale District Sports Council chairman Tony Smith said: "Until recently, the funds required to run the awards event was provided by the public and private sector from a number of grants and sponsorships.
"However, due to the current economic climate, this funding has, unfortunately, been withdrawn.
"We are therefore aiming to find a main event sponsor and individual sponsors for each of the award categories.
"Although we are very much planning for the awards to go ahead as normal, if we don’t raise the funds we need then, with a great sense of sadness, the event will have to be cancelled – which would be a very sad day for the sporting community of the Vale of Glamorgan."
If your organisation would like to benefit from the exposure associated with such a high profile event, and help save the awards, contact District Sports Council chairman Tony Smith on 029 2048 9067 or treasurer Alun Rees on 029 2053 1531.
Meanwhile, all nominations for this year’s awards need to be made by Sunday, January 31, 2010.
You can either nominate online at www.valeofglamorgan.gov.uk/sportspersonality or complete the nomination form which is found inside the latest issue of the ‘Vale Sport’ magazine, available from leisure centres and libraries across the Vale or from the council’s Civic and Dock Offices in Barry.
Alternatively, you can request a copy of a nomination form by calling Julie Morgan on 01446 704748 or emailing JAMorgan@valeofglamorgan.gov.uk
