Three-time BMX world champion Caroline Buchanan did not end the year as she anticipated with the Australian sustaining horrific injuries after a reported accident with a single vehicle.

Buchanan, who has also won five mountain bike world crowns and featured at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games, sustained a broken nose and sternum and a collapsed lung during the incident believed to be in New South Wales, Australia.

The 27-year-old posted two pictures on Instagram, one with a bloodied nose and wearing a neck brace, while the other was an x-ray showing her broken sternum, with the caption:

“I wouldn’t say 2017 ended quite as planned. Its been a rough couple of days in ICU after a vehicle roll. I just moved to a private room and everything is moving in a positive recovery direction.

“Injuries are… Broken sternum, broken nose, collapsed lungs. I’ll keep you guys up to date as we go. Happy New Year! Off season just got a little more tough!!”

Buchanan won her eighth career world title in August at the UCI mountain bike four-cross world championships held in Val Di Sole.
