Centurions' juniors fall at final hurdle

THE Sully Centurions Cricket Club junior season ended on Sunday when the Under 13s played Cardiff in the final of the Cardiff and the Vale Junior competition at St Fagan’s.
Batting first, Cardiff scored 114 for wo off their 20 overs. The pick of the bowlers for the Centurions was Andrew Lewis who opened the bowling from one end and finished with figures of one for 10.
The Centurions' reply started well, with both Adam Sylvester and Lewis Davies finding the boundary regularly. However, they were both dismissed in quick succession for 20 and 19 respectively. Wickets then fell at regular intervals and the run rate began to slip, but the team fought to the end and their innings closed 20 runs short on 94 for seven.
The match could, at one point, have gone either way, but congratulations to Cardiff on winning and well played to the Under 13s on a very good season. The majority of those playing in the final for the Centurions will be able to play in the under 13 age group again next year so here’s hoping for another good season.
Following the final, the junior awards presentation took place at the Seashore Grill in Sully. The event was well attended by the juniors and their parents and the raffle and mini race night raised £160 for the club. Thanks to all for their support and to the Seashore Grill for their hospitality.
At the presentation, the following players were named players of the year for their respective age groups - under 11, Gethin Hicks; under 13, Sam Hopkins; under 15 Tom Pascoe. Well done to all three on their deserved awards and to all the others who played this season.
Overall it has been a good season for the junior section, with increased numbers playing and a number of them being chosen to play representative age group cricket for both Wales and the Cardiff and the Vale regional squads. Many of them have also experienced senior cricket for the first time and they coped and performed well in that environment which, all in all, bodes well for the future.
