Penarth Youth open season with cup win

PENARTH YOUTH 13pts
DINAS POWYS YOUTH 7
THE Penarth Youth rugby team entertained local rivals Dinas Powys in their first game of the season in the Cardiff and District Cup.
Unfortunately, due to various reasons, Penarth did not play any competitive pre-season games so it was not ideal preparation. However, any worries over physicality and contact issues, were dispelled from the start, with both teams playing the game at great speed.
With a competitive Dinas team and good crowd, the game was always going to be close and it boiled down to who took their chances.
Whilst the first half brought chances, both defences held out until Dinas were caught offside under the posts which allowed Penarth's Tom Smith to kick the penalty.
The second half allowed Penarth to exert some extra pressure in the opposition half but they still struggled to break the gain line. With the line-out working well in disrupting opposition ball, chances were always going to occur, but only a second penalty allowed Penarth to move 6-0 in front.
The next score was always going to be vital and actually came from a uncharacteristic mistake from the home team. From five yards out the ball was stolen by Dinas who attempted to clear their lines. However, in doing so the ball was ripped out the hands of the Dinas front row by man of the match Harry Roberts who then fell over the line. Tom calmly converted to give the home side a 13-0 lead.
In fairness to Dinas, they never gave up and, with time running out, grabbed a deserved try which was coolly converted.
With the score at 13-7, it took great ball retention work from the Penarth forwards to deny Dinas another scoring opportunity.
The match was played in great spirit and was a great advert for youth rugby in the area.
Penarth are away to Llandaff in their first league game on Saturday; all support welcome.
