Three tries for Josh in derby victory

TACKLING TRIO: With Ben clinging on, Penarth's Geraint and Tomo move in to finish the tackle on a Dinas Powys attacker.
PENARTH U14s 47pts
DINAS POWYS U14s 10
THE Penarth Rugby Club U14s were made to work hard to gain a deserved victory against local rivals Dinas Powys.
On a slippery but firm surface, the game started slowly, with both teams defending well and running hard in attack.
Penarth were close to full strength with Tom G, Joe and Alex back in action after injury and were looking to put training drills into place. Indeed, they were rewarded with an early try for Josh when he pounced on a loose ball after pressure from Geraint and Niall. Ben converted.
Penarth held firm under pressure from Dinas and then seized on another error to enable Josh on the right wing to hand off three defenders and score under the posts. Ben again converted.
Dinas hit back with a try after some woeful missed tackles from Penarth but the latter responded with a further try after a planned line-out move went well to put Tom Jones over the whitewash following some sterling build-up work from Ellis and Haaris. Ben J again converted.
With Dinas scoring again, Penarth led 21-10 at the interval and made a number of changes to involve all players throughout the development fixture.
The second half was mainly one-way traffic for Penarth, with determined running by full back Luc to gain useful yards every time he had the ball in hand and some deft passing by Joe and Henry in the centre to release George and Josh on the wings. Tomo crossed after a great interception and Josh completed his hat-trick of tries when released by Joe after an earlier attempt was disallowed by the referee. Joe, in his "lucky 13" shirt, scored after a chip and chase and Geraint crossed for the final try after a rumbling, driving line-out. Ben and Joe added conversions.
The "Dame of The Game" award went to Niall for his sterling forward work in the set piece and for throwing his body on the line in all contact situations.
While it took Penarth some time to get into gear against a spirited Dinas team, they were worthy winners.
Thanks are extended to the players, coaches and supporters of both teams for such a well-mannered match; best wishes to Tom who had to leave the pitch injured.
