RECENTLY we saw the return of the Penarth Darts League following the Christmas break.

Friday, January 10, saw the teams toe the oche for the first matches to be played in 2014.

At the Rafa Club the home side, the Rafa A, went down to the visitors from the Cross Keys (2-9) in a close match where both teams had chances at doubles and five games ended on double one. Keys took both pairs with Peter X1 and X1 followed by Tony x1 and x1. Lee and Paul hit a ton, Rafa A took two singles with Paul 100 x1 and Paddy 100 x20.

Keys also took two singles with Tony x20 and Mathonwy 114 x4. The team game was anybody's to win but the Keys took it when Tony hit x5, tons came from Ian, Paul, Peter.

The Station and rivals from across the road at the Coro had a close game resulting in a 6-6 draw. Coro took the first pairs 2-1 when Nick hit x8 and x10. Mitch 100 and Russ 116 x1 took a leg in reply for the Station. Coro took the next pairs 2-0 with Les x4 and x20.

Singles were shared 2-2 with the Station taking the first two through Russ 100 x8 and Maurice x20. P Slocombs x10 and Les x1 took the two singles points for the Coro. The Station needed the team game to draw level which they did as Maurice hit x7 to take the three points.

At the Llandough Legion the home side went down 5-7 to the Rafa B team in a match containing 4 double ones. Rafa B took both pairs through Lee 123 x1 and Mike x1. Dave took a leg for the Legion on x8. Anthony x8 and Dave x1 took the second of the Rafa B's pairs wins. Martin hit 123, Anthony took the first of the Rafa B's three singles wins scoring 134 x10. Lee took the next on x20, Mike followed that with a brace of 140s and x4. Martin was the Legion sole singles winner on x20. Legion rescued the night by taking the three points from the team game with Dave hitting 140 and Martin x1, tons came from Lee and Mike.

At the Ex’s the home side extended their lead at the top of the table to 14 points winning home against the Lion 7-4.

Ex’s took both pairs matches 2-0 through Steve 106 with partner Mark x20 and x5, that was followed up by Paul x8 with partner Jack playing well and scoring 100 120, 100 140 x10. Nathan hit two tons for the Lion and Paul one ton. Ex's went on to win three singles through Steve 125 x20, Paul 140 x3 and Mark x4. Rob took the only singles point for the Lion on x9. Steve and Nathan both hit tons, Jack hit two tons. In the team game the Lion took a much needed three points to give the Lion a chance of staying in touch at the top of the table when captain Paul hit 100 x8.

High scores for the Ex’s came from Mark 140, 123, and Paul 100.

At the Cross keys they were delighted with their win over top side the Ex’s who have not lost a game previously this season. Ex’s took the first pairs through Steve 100, x20 and x16, Kevin 100 x10 and Tony x5 took the second pairs for the Keys. Paul 100 and partner Jack 100 100, 100 x6 took a point for the Ex’s. The Ex’s took the first two singles with John 100 x5 and Paul 100 x17. Kevin 100 x20 and Doug x16 took the the two wins for the Keys with the score delicately balanced at 4-5. The home side took their opportunities in the team game when Kevin hit 140 x5 supported by Tony with a ton. Steve hit 100 and Jack 100 for the Ex’s. Final score - Keys 7, Ex’s 5.

At the Rafa Club the B side drew 6-6 with the Coro club. At the Lion the home side had a good win over the Legion by 9 points to two. At the Station the home side went down 3-9 to visitors from the Rafa A.
