Sully Sports 3 - Butetown 1

AFTER yet another pitch inspection Sully Sports were able to get a game on at Swanbridge in the South Wales Senior League Division One.

As the game began the heavy clouds swept over the Bristol Channel and it was soon to continue pouring with rain again.

Both teams attempted to get the ball moving over the sodden pitch and it was obvious to see mistakes were going to happen.

Sports made a great start when after a period of pressure Long and Lewis combined for Aiden Lewis to volley the ball past the Butetown keeper for Sports to lead.

Butetown though are a team of fighters and made an immediate reply when Sports lost the ball inside their own half and Homp hit a very good lob over the Sports defence. But it was Sports who were making most of the chances with Ferguson, Hemmens, and Lewis combing well.

Sports forced several corners and it was Aiden Lewis meeting Alex Long's cross to head past the keeper. Sports were looking for another and only good defending from the visitors kept them in the game.

The second half saw much the same with Long and Lawlor to quick for the Bute defence and only the keeper stopped Sports as chances were saved and some excellent tackles from Butetown were the difference. The goal Sports wanted came when another Long cross was firmly headed home by Daniel Lawlor for the Sports' third goal. The goal enabled changes to be made as the players had given their all.

The drenched crowd, some in the stand, others huddled under umbrellas, showed their appreciation of the players' efforts from both teams in very wet conditions, which turned into a storm as the game was completed. Within minutes there were large pools of water developing and the teams were thankful of a warm shower and hot meal.

This Saturday sees Sports are on their travels again. Their first of three away weekends beginning with the trip to the Oval Pitch at Ynyshir in the Rhondda Valley meeting at noon at Lidl.

The seconds hope to resume their league quest with a trip to local rivals Cogan Coronation at Cogan Leisure Centre, after seeing their Saturday fixture waterlogged off on the lower pitches at Sully.

The Sully ladies fixture away at Swansea City on Sunday was also cancelled, the Ladies are at home in league action this Sunday against The Vale Ladies, 2pm kick-off.
