A FORMER Stanwell pupil stepped up to the oche to referee a top match at the British Darts Organisation (BDO) Lakeside World Championship recently.

Huw Ware, who aged 20, is one of the youngest referees in the world, stepped up to the plate in what was his third championship, held at the Lakeside County Club and televised by the BBC.

The final was between Stephen Bunting and Alan Norris with Stephen winning £100k prize money.

The Cardiff University English language student got to “call the champion home”, which is every referee’s dream, following a successful week.

The event is the BDO world trophy in Blackpool from February 4 to 9.

Huw is also head of sport for Cardiff University TV, has regularly presented CSM Live (internet media show) and has his own radio sports show Huw’s Irregular Balls Show.
