Penarth Times: SUMMER SUCCESS: Dinas Powys women's soccer side - winners of the South Wales Ladies FC summer tournament. SUMMER SUCCESS: Dinas Powys women's soccer side - winners of the South Wales Ladies FC summer tournament.

GOING into the South Wales Ladies FC summer tournament in relaxed mode, the Dinas Powys women's soccer side soon turned their attentions to trophy success.

Determined to play football and enjoy the experience, Dinas won a one-sided opening game thanks to a goal from Laura May Lewis and, then following two draws, went into their final group game knowing that a win would leave them in top spot and qualification for the semi-finals.

Facing Hafod, Dinas were given great start when Taylor smashed home in the opening minute and they went on to pepper their opponent's goal, with the goalkeeper making fine saves fromBrooke Howells, Lewis, Sam Saunders, skipper Emma Thompson and Jo Jones. Dinas goalkeeper - young Rachel Harold - was also kept on her toes.

Following the 1-0 success, Dinas met Cambrian & Clydach Ladies in the semis and, in a very tight affair, neither team gave much away. Vicky Ellison and Emma Cordy kept a tight ship as Dinas went for a win in open play, but the match went down to penalties. With Harold saving two spot kicks, Thompson converted a Dinas penalty to send her side into the final.

With Dinas having adopted a formation during the tournament which allowed them to counter attack in numbers, they kept this in place for the final against a team that had been league champions and were full of experience.

In a nailbiting game, Dinas threw bodies into challenges, used any part of their body to block shots and tried to counter. After the game failed to produce a goal, it was down to penalties once again and, after seven spot kicks, the scores were still level. So it was down to the the goalkeepers and, after saving well from her opposite number, Harold stepped up to clinch the tournament success and send the Dinas players and fans into a frenzy.
