THE Penarth Cricket Club had only two teams in action on Saturday, with the Seconds agreeing to play on Sunday due to fixture complications and the Fourths out of action.

Entertaining bottom club Croesyceiliog at the Athletic Field, the Firsts elected to bat and John Davies anchored the innings with a fine 93. He was ably assisted by Will Barker (48) and Tom Sidford (46) as the home side reached 269 all out.

In reply, Croesy were never in the hunt and finished on 178 for nine.

Also at home, the Thirds welcomed Radyr who were asked to bat. Against a useful Penarth attack, the visitors totalled 224 for eight, with David Tame scoring 56. Pick of the Penarth bowlers were Gareth Davies (two for 37 from 10 overs) and Alex Langrish (three for 45 from 10).

In reply, Penarth eased to an eight-wicket win, with James Erasmus scoring 97 and missing out on a well deserved 100 when the scores were level. Dave Stevens scored 29 and Gareth Davies was 64 not out on a rare visit from Brighton, but it was left to young Alex Langrish (four not out) to score the winning runs from his first ball.

On Sunday Penarth were involved in a 40-over Welsh Cup game against Tata (Port Talbot) and, after batting first, totalled 213 for six to set up a 24-run win. Ryan Sylvester hit 78 and Nick Morgan (48), with Owen Davies picking up two wickets.

In reply, the visitors were bowled out for 189, with James Docherty taking three wickets for 17 from three overs and Sylvester, Mark Thomas and Andrew Sims picking up two wickets each.

The Seconds were in league action on Sunday and news available at the time of writing was that they had been bowled out for 122. Obviously any positive result would be difficult to envisage.

This weekend the Firsts take on Blackwood at home, the Seconds and Thirds travel to Radyr and Brynmawr respectively and the Fourths entertain Sully Spartans.
