BEFORE Hurricane Bertha struck south Wales with a vengeance Penarth runners made the most of the previously pleasant weather in the Summer Sizzler 5k.

The South Wales Running League fixture, which was the last in a three-race summer series, was held in the grounds of Bute Park last Wednesday, August 6.

Penarth and Dinas Runners managed to get a full men’s team out to score points in the South Wales Running League, but work commitments and various other reasons meant they were only able to field one out of the required four for the women’s team.

Andrew Palmer, Malcolm Bradley, Chris Nellins, Clem Clements, Glenn Powell and Rob Wilson made up the men’s team, while Yvonne Williams battled against illness to represent the club for the women’s team.

Highlights of the race included Les Croupiers runner Martin Rees once again breaking his own age category world record as he notched up an incredible time of 16.06 to finish in 5th place.

Rees, who runs in the Male Veteran 60 category, now holds world records in a range of distances despite only taking up running a few years ago.

Penarth’s Malcolm Bradley, battling against Rees in the same age category, also had an impressive performance as he notched up a personal best time of 20.25 in 73rd place.

Clem Clement was the first Penarth runner to cross the finish line in 19.38 in 62nd.

Andrew Palmer was not far behind in 19.43 in 64th.

Christopher Nellins followed up in 20.16 in 72nd, with Malcolm Bradley hot on his heels in 20.25 in 73rd.

Glenn Powell was next up in 22.32 in 122nd.

Robert Wilson was 23.19 in 140th.

Yvonne Williams crossed the finish line in 24.09 in 149th.
