AS THE season ends at Windsor Bowls Club the annual ‘Jack Munroe Cup’ figured large in the members’ diaries.

The result could not have been more fitting as the winner’s club captain Paul Gunter and Mrs Carole Lewis have both had trials of differing sorts over the past season. It was a real pleasure to see them victorious after holding off the sustained challenge of Peter Morrish and the clubs Rita Hayworth lookalike Bernice Roberts.

The final game of the PG1 League saw the Windsor men with an outside chance of promotion if they could defeat Mackintosh Institute of Cardiff and collect a full house of 14 points. As the records show they failed and only collected four points to drop them down to fourth place below Penarth Rectory Road and no doubt giving their very own scribe Nick Chandler an opportunity to scan his Oxford dictionary for the appropriate superlatives to fill his ‘Times’ column.

Scores as follows:

A Meredith, M Hope, P Gunter, T Holmes: 24-18

B Rogers, A Dudley, E Thorne, M Woodcock: 27 – 17

M Matthews, D Howells, Lloyd Jones, R Hudson: 19 -25

H C Lewis, A Woodcock, C Burton, K Mcleod: 15 – 32

Windsor 85 shots – Mackintosh 92 shots.

At a very special presentation at the conclusion of the match the Windsor captain Paul Gunter had the honour of presenting the Ken Mcleod rink with badges and honorary membership of the famous battle of Britain RAF Squadron ‘646’. This to commemorate their exploits on the 17th, 18th and 19th ends where even Churchillian rhetoric could not save them.

This Sunday sees the season’s finale with the annual captain versus president’s match. Both Paul Gunter and Alun Daniel invite all members to this very special occasion which at its conclusion will see the presentations of all club trophies to the victors and vanquished during the season including the priceless bone china ‘chamber pot’ to the clubs selector.

A warm welcome to all Penarthians is extended.
