SOUTH Wales Senior League Division One

Sully Sports 5 – Penydarren 3

With the pre match Storm interrupting both sides warm up, the weather relented to a fine warm day, but speeding up the surface for two very good passing sides. The visitors’, top of the league, started well against a much changed Sports who were smarting after their Welsh Cup defeat last week at Ammanford. Three starting changes at the back including unavailable regular keeper Kieron Sharratt saw youngster Sam White take the keepers jersey with some fine early saves.

Penydarren showed why they are top in the early play but Sports too had their moments. The play was tight but it took a brilliant volley from the Merthyr based top scorer Colville who gave White no chance to put them into the lead on 25 minutes. Lawlor, Long and Mcinery were in decent form up front for Sports and all three went close. M Blackie was replaced by Storer who immediately made some crunching tackles. Lamb carried on where he left off last week with excellent tackles on the lively opposition.

Half time gave time for Sully to re-assess the position and shortly after the break some great play by the Sully midfield enabled Long to race clear only to be felled in the penalty area by the last defender who was lucky to just receive a yellow card. Long picked himself up and scored from the spot kick. This was just the drive Sully needed as Jones and his co centre back R Brown showed experience to push for more. With Townsend and Lewis now winning the midfield battle Mcinery started to put the passes in. This saw a five minute burst of three more Sully goals from Long, Lawlor and Long again putting the home side 4-1 up. Long was then substituted after some rough treatment from the visitors. Soon after Colville got his second making it 4-2. With Lawlor also withdrawn subs Hanlon and Rees closed down the Penydarren defenders, but one break saw a cross come into the Sully box, keeper White injure his shoulder in a challenge and the ball ended in the Sully net as a goal and no foul. White picked himself up after treatment and made a fine double save to keep the score at 4-3.

With five minutes to go the new strike pairing of Hanlon and Rees broke free to create an opening which saw Hanlon draw the keeper and square a ball for Rees to make the game safe at 5-3. Man of the Match had to be Sam White in goals. Sports, meet the same opposition next weekend by quirk of the fixtures at the Bont Penydarren which will see the home side out for revenge.
