PENARTH Bowling Club’s indoor season continued in a winning vein with victory over Cowbridge BC in last Wednesday’s Men’s match. There were some raised eyebrows at the start of proceedings when “Rambo” Butler lined up with the opposition, but the mystery was solved when it was explained that he had manfully answered a last minute call to help out the visitors who were one man short.

Cowbridge gave a very good account of themselves against a strong Penarth outfit but once again home advantage proved to be the deciding factor and there were wins on all four rinks for Rectory Road.

The pick of the bunch was the Bob Lewis rink, where the experienced Bob with some excellent back-up from Haydn Trow, Alan Stockham and ‘Bowen the Books’ prevailed by 20 shots.

There were also good wins for Penarth’s Scottish contingent with “Braveheart” Grant’s rink well ahead. Things were very close on the other two rinks but the incentive provided by the prospect of being the bottom rink and having to do the washing up was enough to stimulate something approaching blind panic amongst the Captain’s four, skipped by Clive Fry, and, as a result, they produced a truly inspired last few ends, leaving Bob Hill’s quartet to claim the dubious honour of “The Order Of The Marigold Gloves” on this occasion.

Next week, Penarth are delighted to welcome old friends from Murch BC and the following Sunday’s mixed game on November 2 sees the return of Cowbridge BC once again.

Haydn has asked me to deny a spurious rumour circulating in the club that he has been recently spending his nights in the cellar, in a sleeping bag, in order to ensure that he is there first thing in the morning for some early practice. I can indeed categorically confirm that this is no basis of truth whatsoever in these malicious stories as it is actually not a sleeping bag at all, but a camp bed.
