SOUTH Wales Senior League Division One

Sully Sports FC 3 - Cwmbach Royal Stars 0

The heavy rains left Sully with the only action in the area and thanks to some hard work from the committee the game went ahead on time. Manager Jim Blackie making three late changes to an already injury depleted squad after Luke Hanlon found himself in hospital having his appendix removed; they all wish him well and a speedy recovery. The visitors also were unable to confirm their strongest team.

The game started with Sports playing down the slope and creating some good early chances which were not on target and some fair saves from the visiting keeper. Young Sam White was cool under pressure in goals as Cwmbach pressed.

Sports were unlucky with some shots well saved and hitting the bar and post, but the visitors seemed well satisfied with a goalless first half. The pitch was looking good as both teams went looking for the opener with the Senior League Player of the year Gavin Durston in good form. Sully’s Ed Jones did a good marking job and the rest of the defence of Lamb, Storer and the improving Hopkins were solid. Sully’s midfield was getting a little crowded as Townsend, Harding and Lewis started to crank up the pressure. Then after a series of corners Ed Jones met Aiden Lewis corner to glance a header passed the keeper to give Sully the lead. Within minutes the hard working Dan Lawlor notched the second after a good move involving Rees. The Cwmbach coach then sent on more up front and they pressurised the Sully defence which dealt with it well.

Taylor Harding limped off and Robert Brown came on to shore up the back line. Sully wrapped the game up when a good right wing move saw Mark Brown in an advanced position in the box to beat the keeper at his far post. Lamb and Hopkins were making impressive runs from wing back positions causing problems for the Cwmbach midfield and defence, which saw more chances being created in the later stages. Sully now has a very long injury list with a tough game at Butetown next which is away on Saturday with a 2pm kick off.

Team: Sam White, Wes Lamb, Ed Jones, Anthony Storer, Taylor Harding, Mark Brown, Andrew Townsend, Daniel Lawlor, Chris Rees, Robert Brown and Mathew Blackie. MOM Chris Rees just pipped Morgan Hopkins for the honour.
