PENARTH Bowling Club maintained their unbeaten record in the matches played over the past week, though they were pushed all the way on Wednesday when the outcome was only a narrow four shot win.

Phoenix Bowling Club, Cardiff, were the visitors on Sunday, November 30 and, despite the visitors putting up a spirited performance Penarth ended up comfortable victors.

There were solid wins for Bob Lewis and Bob Hill but the star performance came from the Peggy Fitzgerald rink, where the evergreen Peggy, ably assisted by Joan Lewis, Lawrie Brooke and Phil Davidge ran out 11 shot victors and had the added rare bonus of scoring an “eight”.

Wednesday’s match against Vale Combined saw a close run affair in a doggedly fought Triples game. The result was in doubt throughout this match and it was wins by Reg Jones and Bob Hill which finally clinched the victory.

Reg finally prevailed despite a fighting performance from the Penarth Windsor three represented by Dave Hales, and two “promising youngsters”, John Hardess and Ken Trenchard. Bob Hill’s win came at the expense of a trio representing “Dinas Powys Village” comprising Rob Grant, Derek Blainey and Lawrie Brooke.

The winning rinks for the visitors were provided by Murch in the shape of Colin Grant, Derek Davies and Doug Bateman and a five star performance from “Llandough” in the shape of Dave Ingram, Phil Davies and the “quiet man”, Dave Clements.

The word in the club is that if Dave had been the “horse whisperer” he would have started the biggest mass stampede in recorded history.
