PENARTH U15s travelled to Porthcawl for a return fixture after CRICC failed to raise a team.

At a windy Rest Bay pitch, Porthcawl "Seaweeds" were keen to avenge the defeat by Penarth earlier in the season.

Both teams were suffering with having low numbers due to injury or unavailability which meant a number of players playing out of position, especially Tom Griff at scrumhalf and Haaris moved up to the front row to take charge of hooking duties, both performed admirably.

Having not played for a couple of weeks Penarth was raring to go and put their training pitch work into practice.

Declan took charge with the whistle and controlled the match well, including a minor handbag situation between captain Geraint and his opposite number, earning them both a 10 minute stint kicking their heels on the sideline.

Both teams started well, testing the opposition defensive qualities whenever possible. Penarth seemed to have the upper hand from the outset, competing well at every tackle situation, turning balls over and regaining possession, led by Ellis, Hugh and Tom Jones.

The tactic of using the choke tackle was working well and Penarth benefited by keeping the Porthcawl players off the ground and winning the ensuing scrum.

From such a scrum Penarth scored via Josh Lewis who found space on the right wing to round the defence and score. Josh was the scorer again after Penarth pressure taking his try tally to two. Porthcawl hit back through their dangerous running centre pairing.

Morgan controlled the backline with aplomb, ably fed by Tom G at scrumhalf, keeping Henry and Jack fed with ample ball to test the home defence.

More tries were to come through Josh to gain his hat trick, one for Tom Jones after great interplay by the Penarth forwards, keeping the ball alive and not losing the ball in contact, Jack Vowles scoring one from clever backplay, using his speed and swerve to avoid defenders with the try of the day from Niall.

After practising the move many times in training, the back peel off the lineout happened by mistake and Niall, after throwing in, peeled and gathered a pass then found himself in acres of space with the Porthcawl backs in pursuit. Niall outpaced them and with the fullback to beat gave a deft sidestep that Phil Bennett would have been proud of to score and celebrate.

Porthcawl managed to score another through their centres again, making the final score 14 - 38 in Penarth's favour and keeps their unbeaten tag for the last six matches.

The "Dames of the Game" due to both players showing such controlling influence went to Tom Griffiths and Morgan Ashton.

Penarth thanked Porthcawl for their warm welcome and hope to meet them next season again as well as the parents and coaches for their continued support in a very worthwhile fixture.
