WINNING ways continued at Penarth Bowling Club last week, with victory in Sunday’s mixed game against Cowbridge.

There was also a very pleasant internal encounter on Wednesday when the Men’s Indoor captain’s team faced the Ladies’ Indoor captain’s side.

Wednesday’s match proved to be a great success with some keen bowling and much hilarity evident in a very convivial atmosphere.

The final result was not important, save to say that it was a victory for the splendid spirit of co-operation which exists between the two sections of the club.

The top rink for the Men’s team comprised Berwyn Lansley, Chris Davies, Alan Stockham and Bob Hill, whilst the leading lights for the lady captain’s side were the quartet consisting of Russell Daniel, Lawrie Brooke, Barbara Brown and Clive Fry.

Members are still trying to come to terms with lady captain Jackie Rosser’s post match speech where she clearly affirmed that she “has always enjoyed playing with men”...maybe just a smidgeon too much information Jackie.

Cowbridge are always popular visitors at Rectory Road and Sunday’s mixed game proved to be a very enjoyable match with the visitors winning on two of the four rinks.

The Haydn Trow rink won comfortably in the end after a close run first nine ends but the “star performers” were undoubtedly the Peggy Fitzgerald rink where Peggy, ably supported by Sandra Whitfield, Lawrie Brooke and Barbara Brown chalked up an impressive 19 shot victory.

Sadly, Bob Lewis went down to a rare defeat whilst the captain’s suspicions were aroused when “Bowen the Books” asked to be excused after 40 minutes on some flimsy pretext on the lines of “I think I’ve left the immersion heater on!”

However, a quick glance at the scoreboard betrayed the stark truth and explained why John would have rather been somewhere else at the time, but, nevertheless, their plucky treasurer rallied his troops manfully to finish a mere six shots down and thereby averted the threat of the very first “Hari Kari” on the indoor green.
