LAST Saturday saw 20 hardy tennis players take on the wind, to participate in the annual Open Day Tournament at Dinas Powis Tennis Club.

The weather was extremely windy and uninviting, and with less than 15 minutes to the scheduled commencement, only three people had braved the elements.

As always the great Dinas Powis spirit prevailed, with 20 members arriving to play six 20 minute rounds of highly entertaining and competitive tennis.

The leading gent was Simon Keane, who managed an impressive +22 score, with Paul Arcos taking the runners-up prize.

On the lady’s side of the competition, in what was a closely contested event, the overall winning lady was Freda Emery.

To even out the numbers at the beginning, one man was asked to take on the difficult role of playing as a lady. The responsibility for this fell at the feet of Stan Marcola, the club treasurer, and former Second Row Rugby Player, who on foggy days is often confused as one of Sigourney Weaver’s primate colleagues.

Never one to shirk his responsibilities, Stan went out and played some of the best tennis that he/she has ever played, and ran out as the runner up of the lady’s competition.

A massive thank you from your club captain’s for the support shown by these 20 members, and following the presentation of some gifts, all participants tucked in to the first of the infamous Dinas Powis Summer Teas.
