SULLY Sports Youth Football club played their final league game at home to Cardiff Celts last Saturday knowing that nothing but a win would ensure a league championship in their first season of youth football.

Sully started the first half quickly and Kyle Henderson put them 1-0 up with a strike from the edge of the area to settle the nerves. Although Sully were on top for most of the first half they could not add to their slender advantage and the Celts looked dangerous on the counter attack.

It needed Lloyd James to outpace the Celts defence and send a shot into the bottom corner to double their advantage and settle everyone down. Harry Lambert then sent over a perfect cross for Ross Adams to head home a third just before half-time.

The second half saw Sully playing some great football, Kieren Miller scored with his left foot from the edge of the area to take his tally of goals this season to 44. Minutes later a Messi type flick from Sam Nilson made the game safe.

Rhys Knight volleyed home a stunning sixth before James Jones sent a left foot drive into the back of the net. A new strike force was unleashed on the Celts of Rhys Fford and Sam White and the unlikely duo created and finished a further three goals between them to commence the celebrations for what has been a fantastic season.

The previous week had saw Sully narrowly defeated in the South Wales Youth cup final in a rain soaked Taff’s Well but the boys had pushed Caerau Ely all the way in what was an exciting match. Sully finished the league one point ahead of Cardiff Corries who had pushed them all the way in what was a very tough and competitive league.

Some highlights from the season saw them win an amazing 6-5 tussle against rivals Dinas Powys with a last minute winner from James Scott who has been immense all season. Ben Dwyer’s penalty save against Llanrumney ensured three vital points early in the season as did a point blank save from Sol Bord in that crucial game against Dinas.

The Sully defence have stood up to everything thrown at them this year with standout performances against Lisvane Panthers and Celts by Pete Tutthill and Thomas Jones respectively. Kieran Pirlo Allen, although a defender at heart, assisted with his dead ball routine for many goals during the season and while the going got tough Scott Duttfield stood out against Holton Road and Clwb Cymric.

A big thank you to Dan Wilson and Jordan Payne for their contribution to the season with the only setback arising due to the loss of Josh Lewis through injury which was a major setback for Sully this year as his energy and skill was missed during the run in.

Sully’s manager Rob Jones was full of praise and proud of his whole squad for such an achievement considering that all the boys were in their first year of youth football and would like to thank the parents and sponsors for such a fantastic season.
