THE ladies of Windsor Bowls Club, under captain Veronica Flitney, are threatening to break all club records since 1926.

With five games played, four victories have ensued, with one defeat by Rectory Road being the only blot. The rinks of Moyra Owen, Di Thomas, Kay Dyer, Di Roper, Lona Thomas and Lars White and their colleagues. With so many new members the future looks assured.

Likewise, the gentlemen of Windsor are unbeaten in both the Munro Cup, with wins against Llantwit Major and Sully, and the Carruthers Cup, where they have defeated Cowbridge and Barry Plastics.

Sadly, much as captain Brian Rogers derives great pleasure from these wins, it is tempered by the unhealthy atmosphere in the clubhouse. Having democratically elected a selection panel, it is incumbent on all members to get on with representing the 104-year-old club.

The PG2 players under captain Alun Daniel also won their first match against Cardiff Athletic by 14 shots, after fielding arguably their strongest team for many years. There were wins for the Badger Lloyd-Jones, Peter Morrish and David Howell rinks with Roger Ellis making a winning debut.

The only defeat came when the aged four of A Meridith, T Warburton, David Hales, a handicap in itself, and H C Charles Lewis lost a close encounter.

The highlight of the season, for many, is the gentlemen’s tour to Devon and this year’s event was no exception.

Arranged by Phillip Parry, games were played against Culm Vale, Exmouth, Topsham and Exeter Exonia. With two wins and two defeats the tourists were pleased.

There were four new tourists in David Johnson, Roger Ellis, Paul Parker and Bryn Peregrine, and all four accredited themselves in true Windsor fashion. The world renowned ‘Three Tenors’, namely Harry Watters, Alun Daniel and Eddie Thorne entertained the hosts and A J John Hardess came home with considerably more money in his money belt than when he left.

The captains of the day, Austin Meredith, David Adams and Richard Flitney commanded the troops by example and captain Brian Rogers went all four days unbeaten. Next year’s tour to Pembrokeshire is already oversubscribed; yet another good sign for the Windsor and its future.

All members of Windsor and the bowling and rugby fraternity wish a speedy recovery to the Reverend Brian Rees, who unwell on tour is now hospitalised. There is a large cigar and numerous pints awaiting your return.
