THE past seven days have proved to be a somewhat difficult period for Penarth Bowling Club. However, there were notable bright spots in the Alliance and Munro Cup games and the Ladies Evening League.

Tuesday’s Alliance match with Cardiff Athletic produced a substantial 61-53 win with success on three of the four rinks.

Pick of the bunch was the 20-8 victory for Bob Hill, Alan Stockham, Russell Daniel and Mike Conway, though the Roger Gidman and Ron Maggs quartets also weighed in with wins to seal the success.

There was a resounding win in Wednesday’s Munro Cup match against Cadoxton at home, where all four rinks won to notch up an 86-48 winning margin and 14 valuable points.

Leading the way for Penarth was the redoubtable Nick Chandler, who in company with Rob Grant, Bob Horne and Gareth Rosser recorded a 30-13 win.

This was well backed up by excellent displays from Clive Fry, Bob Hill and Dave Plank, whose contributions kept Penarth’s Munro Cup campaign on track.

The Alliance side had another success on Thursday when they defeated old friends from Murch BC. Once again all three rinks shone with wins for Colin Hicks and Haydn Trow but the top four on this occasion was the Ron Maggs foursome where Ron, with the help of Tony Thomas, Brian Fisher and Russell Daniel won 21-11 to set the seal on a 58-38 victory.

The least said about Saturday’s Private Greens matches the better. The PG One side travelled to Pontyclun and suffered a gruelling afternoon on a difficult green where alternating green and brown patches made bowling something of a lottery.

Having said that, the hosts did largely out-bowl the Rectory Road men with the end result being a 63-101 reversal, all four rinks down and the proverbial “null points”.

Things were a little better at home where the PG two team, despite a more spirited performance, went down by 10 shots overall and produced the day’s only winning rink thanks to Ron Maggs, Paul Church, John Peterson and Neil Gaskell and only slender single shot reversals for Guy Thomas and Mike England.

The ladies had a good start to the week with Tuesday’s Evening League match producing an emphatic 43-18 win with both rinks up.

Betty Jones, Belinda Price, Kath Jenkins and Chris Davies turned in a 30-6 scoreline and Tricia Brinkworth’s rink also won by 13-12 .

Thereafter, the week went downhill somewhat with defeats in the two other matches.

The encounter with Romilly Park in the double-rink match saw Penarth comprehensively defeated on both rinks to end up 25-55 in arrears.

This lack of success was once again evident in Wednesday’s match with the Ladies of Penarth Windsor, where all three rinks were defeated, with the brightest spot being provided by Elizabeth Coleman, Pat Rees, Barbara Brown and Norma Duggan who at least managed to keep the scoreline down to a level of respectability.
