PENARTH Bowling Club enjoyed another successful time last week with emphatic victories in the Munro Cup and the PG One and news that the Club has qualified for the Finals of the Huw Meddins Triples Tournament.

The week’s opening fixture was an Alliance match at Penylan which was played on an even paced green on a somewhat blustery day.

Though Penarth only lost this one by six shots, they can largely thank the efforts of the ever consistent Ron Maggs, who, with the help of captain, Russell Daniel, Paul Church and Alan Stockham, won 21-8, to put a far better gloss on the losing performances of the other three rinks.

The Rectory Road men were taking no prisoners in Wednesday’s Munro Cup match, played at home.

This one saw Penarth completely dominate the proceedings with the visitors being crushed by 70 shots.

Once again it was the foursome of Clive Fry, Bob Lewis, captain Phil Davies and Ron Birkby which led the way with a thumping 34-12 win.

There were also excellent performances from Nick Chandler’s rink (29-12), Dave Dalby (23-7) and Colin Grant (24-9) to secure the maximum 14 points and maintain the Penarth challenge in this league.

Penarth continued this winning form in the PG One match at home to Barry Plastics at Rectory Road on Saturday.

Some excellent bowling by the home side saw an end to the recent losing sequence in this competition, and a valuable 12 points gained as a result of the convincing 94-63 victory.

Star rink for Penarth was the Bob Hill four, where the consistent Bob, with Colin Grant, Haydn Trow and Lawrence Brooke (the latter, remarkably, bowling as well as ever, following knee replacement as recently as May), won by 30-13.

Once again Clive Fry (25-14) and Nick Chandler (22-13) delivered the goods to ensure this success.

It was also confirmed that Penarth will appear in the finals of the Huw Meddins Triples Tournament in September, following their qualification at the preliminary round played on the hallowed turf of the Penarth Windsor Club recently.

So well done to the two rinks involved and good luck in the finals which will also feature strong opposition in the shape of Barry Athletic, Barry Romilly, Sully and Llantwit Major.

The Penarth ladies had mixed fortunes in the last seven days.

Once again, the weather intervened on Monday, causing the cancellation of the scheduled match.

In the League game against Murch the opposition completely dominated and, in a match the Rectory Road team will want to forget very quickly, the final result was a thumping 17-56 defeat.

However, things improved significantly in the match against Cadoxton, on Thursday, when Penarth triumphed by 35 shots to 18. This was thanks to a good win by Wendy Grant, Kath Jenkins, Lynda Williams and Jill Gaskell who prevailed by 22-5 and a fighting draw from Tricia Brinkworth, Lorraine Palmer, Mary Bowen and Chris Davies.

The week’s proceedings ended on a high note with the traditional “Captain’s Day” celebrations, where captain Phil Davies in company with a large turnout of the membership, enjoyed a carefree session of bowling, this year played in the Indoor Stadium, due to the appalling weather conditions, followed by a superb meal, prepared and served by the ladies of the club.

The celebrations continued well into the evening and the persistent ringing of the bar till must have been pure music to the ears of “Bowen The Books”.
