IN THEIR finest victory to date in the PG1, Windsor Bowls Club, under captain Brian Rogers, defeated the league leaders and odds-on favourites for the championship in convincing style, by 85 shots to 67.

This now throws the title hopes of Windsor to a high, with just Pontyclun and Cardiff in the mix, as the last four games have to be played.

Leading the victory charge for Windsor was the consistent Matthew Woodcock rink, as with all four players contributing throughout the game, a 30 shot to just eight was achieved.

Also, to the fore was the Steve Close four, which included Welsh international legend Artie Woodcock. Their 22 shot to 12 was only marred by an ill-judged remark by their inexperienced lead, which Artie, with his vast knowledge of bowls etiquette soon righted.

The Toby Holmes four, usually so dependable, suffered a rare defeat by being simply out-bowled by a stronger rink. The mercurial Ken McLeod four lost by dropping too many counts of fives, fours and threes, which has been the story of the season to date. This, when in contention for a victory, must surely give the selectors room for thought.

S Ellard, A Dudley, P Gunter and T Holmes: 20-23

A Morgan, A Woodcock, C Burton and S Close: 22-12

B Rogers, P Gooding, E Thorne and M Woodcock: 30-8

M Matthews, R Flitney, M Hope and K McLeod: 13-24

Windsor 10 points, Cardiff four points.

In the Alliance, Windsor lost to Cardiff Athletic by 28 shots, with not one rink registering a winning score.

In the celebration match between Windsor and great friends from centenary celebrating Belle Vue, an excellent match and ensuing evening took place. The result was as to be expected an honourable draw.

The PG2 result was yet another of those nail-biting affairs, with captain Alun Daniel’s men just falling short in the final ends.

The captains’ rink, skipped by Judge Jeffery’s very own chief adviser David Hales, set the tone with a superb display of bowling from beginning to end.

T Evans, A Daniel, D Howells and D Hales: 27-10

D Stafford, J Price, F Coleman and H C Lewis: 20-17

J Worlock, K Trenchard, A J Hardess and Badger Jones: 18-30

R Ellis, R Williams, M Cucceniello and P Morrish: 18-30

Windsor 83 shots, four points; Cardiff 87 shots, 10 points.

The ladies, having received a pep-talk and threats of a physical nature from captain Veronica, returned to winning ways by beating Murch in a treble fixture. The overall shots difference was Windsor 125 shots and Murch ladies 80 shots. Highlights included:

V Flitney, D Roper and Moyra Owen: 24-11

C Dyer, M Huntley, J Davies and Lona Thomas: 22-8

All Windsor members are delighted with the news that a new state of the art television is to be installed, thanks to a generous grant from the ladies amenity fund.
