LAST week proved to be a largely fruitful one for Penarth Bowling Club, with five victories recorded in the seven matches played.

There was a notable success in the PG Two and a return to winning ways in the Munro Cup.

Russell Daniel’s Alliance side have enjoyed a largely successful year but, unfortunately, the visiting Rhiwbina team found Rectory Road to their liking on Tuesday and inflicted a rare seven-shot reversal on Penarth.

With three rinks losing narrowly it was left to the very experienced Peter Small to save the home team’s blushes when he won by 20-16 helped by Colin Hicks, Ken Brinkworth and Tony Thomas.

Wednesday saw normal service resumed after the last week’s trauma at The Windsor as Penarth chalked up an overwhelming victory over their good friends from Murch.

There were good wins for Bob Willmott (22-9), Rob Grant (29-15) and a well-earned draw for Bob Hill, but, yet again Penarth’s star skip was Clive Fry, who, teamed up with Phil Davies, Don Shirley and Paul Church turned in a thumping 27-9 winning scoreline.

Thursday’s friendly against Cardiff Masonic turned out to be a very hard fought game with Penarth just squeezing through by two shots.

There were two winning home rinks with Bob Willmott up 15-9 and Bob Hill, aided by Phil Davies, Brian Knight and John Bowen, sealing the success for Penarth with a convincing 20-11 scoreline.

Saturday saw Penarth produce an excellent PG Two performance at home to local rivals, Dinas Powys. The game produced a heartening 75-57 victory and 12 precious points.

Bob Hill was, once again, in good form winning 22-15 and Brian Brennan weighed in with a fine 16-10 score.

The outstanding Penarth rink on this occasion was again skipped by the evergreen Ron Maggs, who is enjoying a particularly successful 2015.

Ron, with the excellent support of Alan Stockham, Nick Thomas and Russell Daniel set the seal on a consummate performance with a 24-13 win.

Penarth ladies found the going a little tougher this week after last week’s euphoria.

The week started well with an emphatic 44-23 win over Roath Park in Monday’s Evening League encounter.

The pick of the Penarth rinks was skipped by Tricia Brinkworth, who, teamed up with Joyce Allen, Wendy Grant and Chris Church, had a substantial 24-13 win. With the Belinda Price rink also winning 20-12, victory was assured.

In Tuesday’s Double Rink match at Cadoxton, Penarth just lost out by three shots overall, despite a spirited 17-10 win for skip Sue Croll, Lorraine Palmer, Diana Willcocks and Chris Church.

Llantwit Major are always popular visitors at Rectory Road but, on Thursday last, the friendly spirit did not extend to matters on the green as the opposition won on both rinks to inflict a 23-40 reversal on Penarth.

Penarth Bowling Club have an excellent record in supporting local charities and the week before last Derrick Musk was able to present a cheque for £1,700 to Karen Jones of the Marie Curie Hospice, which represented the accumulated proceeds of the club’s fundraising activities over the past 12 months.
