THE good news from Windsor Bowling Club is that its talented ladies continue to carry all before them.

They won the ladies’ afternoon league title and now go on to play for the champion-of-champions’ title at Pencoed next Tuesday. To secure the initial afternoon league title they defeated the ladies of Barry Central.

In the double rinks’ league, Windsor finished a creditable third place.

The bad news comes from the men’s section, where another administration error meant that David Howells and his team were waiting patiently at their Robinswood Arena whilst their opponents, Cardiff Mackintosh, were doing exactly the same at their Cardiff HQ.

Worse was to follow on Wednesday, when Munro Cup leaders Windsor took on second place Barry Romilly in a winner-takes-all match.

In fact, Windsor only had to secure four of the 14 points on offer to be crowned champions. The fact that they failed, owed much to the fact that Romilly’s approach to the encounter was much more positive and some of the Windsor players succumbed to the pressure for a number of reasons.

One has to congratulate Barry as they were much the better team on the night.

B Rogers, P Gooding, E Thorne and M Woodcock: 16-20

M Matthews, R Flitney, R Hudson and K McLeod: 17-17

AMorgan, A Woodcock, M Hope and S Close: 10-16

R Williams, C Burton, P Gunter and T Holmes: 11-16

Windsor 54 shots, Barry Romilly 79.

Another setback for captain Brian Rogers and the club was the defeat in the semi-final of the Alan Martin Cup for two rinks, within the Vale.

The rink of Matthew Woodcock jelled very well, with all four players making a good contribution. The rink of Ken McLeod, however, did the opposite and failed to play to the standard one would have expected from four such luminaries.

B Rogers, E Thorne, S Close and M Woodcock: 22-20

R Flitney, C Burton, P Gunter and K McLeod: 9-22

Combined scores: Windsor 31, Llantwit Major 42.

In the St Joseph’s friendly encounter, Windsor were again the losers by 53 shots to 65, with only the rink of D Johnson, H Morris, L Davies and skip H C Charles-Lewis winning.

Finally, the tide turned in the PG1 championship, where Windsor, challenging for the title and promotion, played at Barry Plastics on a green dubious as fit-for-purpose and where being a talented skittler was of advantage. The fact that Windsor’s highest winning rink contained no less than three former BP players, can be no coincidence.

B Rogers, P Gooding, E Thorne and M Woodcock: 19-17

A Morgan, A Woodcock, M Hope and S Close: 25-11

R Williams, C Burton, P Gunter and T Holmes: 19-16

M Matthews, R Flitney, R Hudson and K McLeod 19-19

Mention must be made of both Phil Gooding and Tony Holmes, who both bowled superbly and made a huge contribution to securing victory on their respective rinks.

Windsor 82 shots, Barry Plastics 63. The 13 points gained keeps Windsor’s hopes very much alive.
