PENARTH Bowling Club’s poor run in the PG One league continued last week with two defeats. Elsewhere there was another excellent win in the PG Two, and successes in the Munro Cup and The Alliance.

The Alliance side put in another good performance on Tuesday with a 15 shot winning margin against their very good friends from Murch BC. The visitors put up a very good fight with victory on two rinks but a resounding 12 shot win for Roger Gidman’s four and, yet again, a masterly display from Ron Maggs who skipped the rink containing captain Russell Daniel, Brian Fisher and “Bowen The Books”, and sealed a well-earned win.

Penarth visited Sully on a balmy summer’s evening on Wednesday to engage battle with Barry Plastics for the third time in a fortnight.

At the half-way stage Penarth appeared to have the match well in hand with a comfortable lead but the hosts were not going to give up easily and they fought back heroically to narrow the overall gap to just one shot as Penarth inched it by 67-66.

Clive Fry saw a 17-7 lead reduced to 18-18 and Nick Chandler, similarly, saw an eight shot advantage whittled down to just two at the close. The Colin Grant rink containing Neil Gaskell, Rob Grant and Haydn Trow managed to steady the ship enough to secure the win with a 21-16 scoreline in this, the last of the 2015 Munro cup games.

It is hard to find anything positive to say about the club’s efforts in the two PG One matches played last week.

On Monday, a strong Cardiff BC had much the better of the exchanges and won on three of the four rinks to inflict an embarrassing 101-59 reversal on the Rectory Road side. Penarth’s only winning rink, Nick Chandler (skip), Bob Horne, Alan Stockham and Berwyn Lansley, did manage to secure two points and saved the whitewash on a very forgettable performance in the main.

Penarth put up a somewhat more spirited performance against Saturday’s visitors, Pontyclun. With Rob Grant (18-19) and Colin Grant (15-18) losing narrowly and the redoubtable Nick Chandler, this time assisted by Dave Hilldrup, Nick Thomas and Gareth Rosser winning 18-16 there were only two shots in it over these three rinks. Sadly, the other home rink were trounced by 20 shots leaving Penarth, once again, trailing, this time by 62-84.

Saturday’s PG Two encounter at Pontyclun was an altogether different story.

Mike England’s team continued their successful run with a fine 78-57 victory and secured a very valuable 13 shot haul.

Bob Hill fought a gritty draw and there was success once again for Ron Maggs (16-12). Brian Brennan weighed in with a convincing 22-14 victory, well supported by John Whitfield, Tony Gent and Neil Gaskell and, in the top performance of the day, Bob Willmott (skip), Mike England, Ken Brinkworth and Dave Holdaway notched up a 22-13 scorecard on a very satisfying encounter for Penarth.

As Ron Birkby has had no news of the ladies results to date he can only fear the worst. Either the scorelines do not make good reading or, as is more likely, captain Lorraine is still suffering the after effects of her Captain’s Day celebrations last Sunday.

All will be revealed in the fullness of time.
