GLAMORGANSHIRE Golf Club was given the honour of hosting the Welsh Golf Championships on the weekend of August 14-16.

Thirty-two teams from all corners of Wales qualified for the final stages and few gave The Glamorganshire much chance of making it beyond round one.

The course was set up magnificently by Mike Williams and his fellow greens staff. The first day's play was delayed for three hours due to rain.

Some teams were unable to conclude their games due to failing light and returned the following day.

The Glamorganshire was drawn against Clays Golf Club, from Wrexham, in the first round and the home team secured a comfortable win.

Their second round opponents were local rivals, The Vale of Glamorgan Golf Club. Simon Curle, who had been a mainstay of the first team since the 1970s, was drafted in.

Some uncharacteristic low raking hooks with the driver persuaded Simon to rest himself for the next round.

Martin Price then showed his true worth as the captain's pick for this tournament. Martin was drawn to play one of the Vale's young guns and his handicap was seven strokes more.

He went on to finish off his opponent on the 17th which he also did in the next two rounds.

The victory propelled the team into the quarter finals against one of the major favourites and reigning Glamorgan Premier League Champions, Neath Golf Club.

Jordan stood up to the plate with a superb exhibition of golf and trounced his opponent.

Radyr Golf Club were the semi final opposition and the match proved to be nail biting stuff up to the very last shot.

The captain again led from the front and won his match.

The omens weren't good as they faced going down the 18th but miraculously were able to win the hole.

Going down the first extra hole, Brian hit a storming drive and struck his second shot into the middle of the green.

Brian put him out of his misery with a superb putt which was accompanied by an outburst of joy from his supporters.

By now the crowds had really built up along the first fairway. Martin and his opponent hit the green in 2 with Martin slightly closer to the hole.

His opponent just missed his putt and then Martin lipped out with his. The putts were conceded. The second extra hole was the dangerous par three 2nd. The pin had been placed in the jaws of two bunkers at the front of the green.

It was also the narrowest point of the green and in a perilous position. Martin struck a lovely shot which came to rest 10 feet short of the pin.

The Radyr player failed to take full account of the borrow and his putt sailed past the hole. It seemed an eternity for the ball to drop into the cup.

The crowd erupted and Martin uncharacteristically did a Woosie whoop and pose ala Augusta.

The occasion was emotionally draining and the team had little recovery time before facing Parc Golf Club in the final.

Jordan again led off and the captain chalked up his fifth successive victory but those behind him were clearly feeling the pressure.

The team played its best golf by far this year and were worthy finalists.
