YET another week of history in the making at the Windsor Bowls Club of Penarth.

The week began with the last Alliance League game for gentlemen of a certain age, against Cardiff Bowls Club. A loss by just three shots was testimony to the skills of Martin Dorrell, Dave Johnson, Nigel Williams and superb skip Alun Daniels, who triumphed by 20 shots to nine. This, whilst the other three Windsor rinks fell by the wayside, Windsor 56 shots, Cardiff 59.

The club’s annual Jack Munro Cup for club members was a huge success, mainly for the involvement of the lovely ladies’ section. Leading the way were Charlene Burton, Phyllis Gunter, Charlotte Lewis and best of all Mary Huntley in her first full season of bowls.

She had the unenviable task of partnering the pragmatic Scot, Ken McLeod, and the fact that they reached the final only to lose to Kay Dyer and Rod Hudson speaks volumes for Mary’s skill and determination.

The final PG2 game played on Windsor’s unique second green saw Barry Plastics as the opponents.

In a game where liquid refreshment abounded, just one shot was the difference as the game ended in Barry’s favour. Yet again, Windsor was indebted to just one winning rink, as Lance Davies, Dave Brenton, Trevor Warburton and the vastly experienced Denis Morgan, won 26 shots to 19. Windsor 83 shots, Barry 84.

It was only right and proper that after such a marvellous season, with so many successes for both the men’s and ladies’ sections, that the Brian Rogers led PG1 team played their last game against Mackintosh of Cardiff knowing that victory would crown Windsor as league champions.

To say that it was achieved in some style speaks volumes for the way the team has played throughout the season, with no fewer than 11 victories out of 12 games. With all four rinks winning and 14 points amassed, Windsor’s name stands proudly at the top of the division.

A Morgan, A Woodcock, M Hope and S Close: 21-17

M Matthews, R Flitney, R Hudson and K McLeod: 25-16

B Rogers, C Burton, P Gunter and T Holmes: 25-19

S Ellard, M Lloyd Jones, E Thorne and M Woodcock: 28-20

Windsor 99 shots and 14 points, Mackintosh 72.

As there were two games being played at the same time, a mammoth task of feeding 64 ravenous men confronted the Windsor ladies. Needless to say, however big the challenge, those wonderful girls, under their leader Di Thomas always triumph.

This day was no exception, as the plaudits proved after a sumptuous cooked meal, followed by apple tart and ice-cream gave captains Alun and Brian, plus the two opposing captains, reason to wax lyrical on the good ladies’ efforts.

Finally a personal thank you to all at the Penarth Times and to all the fantastic members, both male and female, at the unrivalled Windsor Bowls Club for the support Eddie has received as both bar manager and press officer. It has been a privilege to serve you all in some small way.
