PENARTH Bowling Club enjoyed a successful run last week with two victories at the Rectory Road Indoor Stadium.

The men's team saw off the challenge of Murch BC on Wednesday and there was a good victory over Cowbridge in Sunday’s mixed match.

Murch are always popular visitors at Penarth and, on Wednesday, a match played in an excellent spirit, saw the home side dominate proceedings despite the best efforts of the visitors.

In the event Penarth ran out comfortable winners on all four rinks with pride of place going to “Whispering Dave” Clements, aided by Phil Davies, Lawrie Brooke and Alan Stockham with a winning margin of considerable proportions. With substantial wins for Clive Fry and Colin Grant they can only sympathise with Bob Lewis’ rink for having to do the washing up on the strength of an eight shot win.

The visit of Cowbridge for Sunday’s mixed game was a very much closer fought affair with the visitors producing some excellent bowling and with the visitors victorious on one rink and with a mere two shot loss on another it was thanks to the other two Penarth rinks that the spoils went to the home side.

Bob Hill, with the able assistance of Barbara Brown, John Bowen and Joan Lewis won through 26-16 after falling behind in the early stages and Bob Lewis, backed up by Maureen Dalby, Tony Gent and Norma Duggan swept to an 18-8 success.

Last Thursday’s Mixed Rinks League produced a very rare bowling event indeed. No, they are not talking about Brian Brennan being first off the green or Guy Thomas turning up half an hour before the start, but a match in which the maximum score of eight shots was achieved on two successive ends.

Given that an “eight” is an occurrence which happens only in exceptional circumstances and that it never occurs twice in the same match to have this event on successive ends on the same rink must surely be some sort of record.
