Welsh Cup Round 2

Goytre 4 v Dinas Powys 1

THE villagers travelled to high-flying league one leaders Goytre knowing this was always going to a hard test.

Dinas had a game plan and set about the job in hand with a belief that has been lacking in recent matches.

Scott Muir nearly shocked the home crowd as his strength and pace saw him clean through on goal in the opening minutes but his shot was smoothed. The visitors settled the earlier of the two teams and following another productive attack Nicky Bruce and young King Mwedzo saw their shots blocked.

As the game went on Goytre got their passing game together and the visitors showed a great amount of discipline as they stuck together and prevented the home side to just a few half chances.

Adam Jones forced his way through down the left and cut in well but his strike was pulled wide. Kieron James looking sharp in the middle and went on one of his trademark runs but his shot was high and wide.

Nicky Bruce playing in the central role struck a 35 yard free kick that the home side 'keeper did very well to hold.

Then with 10 minutes remaining to the break disaster struck as Goytre put together a fine passing move dragging the Dinas back four out of position and managed to score.

Going in at the break one down Dinas knew they were well and truly still in the game with the amount of chances they had created.

The second half was barely five minutes old when the villagers failed to deal with a cross field ball and they found themselves two down.

Still not a team to throw the towel in Dinas brought on Nathan Donnelly and went in search of goals.

It wasn't long before Rhys Palmer showed why he has taken to Welsh league football so well. His powerful run down the right and quality cross was met by Donnelly to pull one back.

Minutes later the impressive King Mwedzo thought he had brought the score level as he managed to get in ahead of his defender but his shot was just forced wide.

Goytre had periods when you could see why they are top of division one and moved the ball very well and at pace but the young Dinas lads stuck to their jobs. James Marr and Ben Luck were instrumental in this as they were both rocks in the heart of the defence.

Introducing young Tom Edwards and Steffan Ross, Dinas threw caution to the wind. Goytre then hit them with a sucking punch with two late goals.

Mason Ahmun another young lad who was solid throughout thought he had scored as he connected very well from a Bruce corner but his header just went over the bar.

Well done Goytre and good luck for the next round. Dinas are home Saturday in the league cup as they entertain Taffs Well.
