PENARTH Under-16s overcame the disappointment of losing their last match to convincingly beat a committed Llandaff team by 14 - 46 at Llandaff playing fields.

Each team were raring to go having tried to play this fixture on the last two Sundays and had been postponed due to the bad weather.

Penarth were first to score through some clever kicking by Ben J and Joe, putting the Llandaff back three under pressure with the sun in their eyes. Josh pressurised from a Joe box kick and with a lovely bounce and gather he scampered in to score under the posts, Ben J converted.

Penarth were dominant for the rest of the first half scoring a number of well worked tries with the luckless Llandaff failing to register a score. Geraint controlled a driving lineout showing great cohesion by the Penarth eight to register their first try using such a tactic, being marshalled at scrum half by Joe.

The next two Penarth tries were scored due to extreme pressure by the backline, hassling Llandaff every time they had the ball.

Firstly Morgan caught a wayward Llandaff pass and streaked out to score under the posts unopposed then an almost identical situation minutes later saw Luc from full back take a loose pass and showed pace and sidestep with tacklers nipping at his heels to score on the left, Ben J converted both, making the score 0 - 26.

Llandaff hit back through their scrum half and outside backs but the Penarth defence held firm to keep them clear of the whitewash. There was time for one more try before half-time for Penarth after another successful driving lineout and a series of close range rucks, Dan Anderton burrowed over for his first try of the season, 0-31.

Changes were made early in the second half with Dan having a head injury, Tom J, Ben Evans, Alex O and Chris entered the challenge combined with positional changes in the backline.

Gruff roused the forwards to do their job, while Joe controlled at fly half, feeding Ben, Jack, Morgan and Josh in the capable set of backs. Penarth gained a penalty 15 metres from the Llandaff line for Joe to miss out as the ball was stripped illegally as he crossed the line and Penarth opted for the kick at goal to make the score 0 - 34.

Llandaff stuck at their game plan although some of their more dangerous players seemed to be missing in the second half so they reverted to using their big forwards to set up useful ruck ball and scored two well worked tries from such situations, converting both.

Luc was the next scorer after slick hands behind the scrum from Gruff, Morgan and Jack to put Luc in space to round the defence and score. Josh scored the last Penarth try after pressure on the Llandaff line saw their clearance kick rebound off a player and Josh showed his speed of thought to pounce on the loose ball, Ben J converted well. Final score Llandaff 14, Penarth 46.

A very pleasing performance for all players, parents and coaches. They hope to keep it up for the rest of the season and especially in the next fixture against Cowbridge in two weeks time.

Ceri duly voted Ellis as this week's Dame of the Game for his consistent tackling and pinching of the ball in the tackle, adding to his reputation as the human claw.

Penarth thank Llandaff for their welcome and to the referee that showed great attitude in a well contested game. Penarth also thank their sponsors for this season who have contributed towards new team kit for the remainder of the season and to be worn during their end of season tour in France, namely Cabot, South Wales Wood Recycling, PDS Bulk Liquids, David Baker Estate Agents, Pro Health Nutrition and Cornerswell Road Carpets.
