PENARTH and Dinas Runners rounded off the club championship season with the Sospan 10 mile multi-terrain race over the weekend.

The race, which covers roads, trails, forest paths and even the beach, takes place in Pembrey Country Park in Llanelli.

Two of the star performers of the day were Ben Butler-Madden, who finished 12th overall, and Yvonne Williams, who finished second in her age category.

Ben, who was also fourth in his age category, was the first Penarth runner across the finish line in 1.04.57.

Malcolm Bradley was next in 1.23.14.

Louise Hunt, who was seventh in her age category, was the first woman from Penarth to finish in 1.24.10.

Sarah Lees was next in 1.28.59.

Lindsey Hunt was 1.29.09.

Alison Whitfield was 1.32.29.

Yvonne Williams was 1.32.53.

Nigel Adams was 1.35.32.

Judy Maragna was 1.51.23.

Steve Goodfellow was 1.53.26.

Andrea Goodfellow was 1.53.27.

On November 8 Penarth and Dinas Runners also went to Llandaff Fields to take part in the second race of the series of the Gwent League cross country.

Conditions were slightly muddy but rain kept away for the ladies 6k race and men's 10k.

A record number of 288 ladies started the three small laps and one large lap race.

Cath Tailby, as in first fixture, led the Penarth and Dinas ladies home in 83rd place, followed by Deb Evans 98th, Andrea Hurman just behind in 106th place, Lisa Cleary was next in 135th place, all bringing the Lady Vet 45 team into third place in a very strong field.

Ruth Owens had a very strong run finishing 143rd, Yvonne Williams 167th, Lindsey Hunt 182nd and Sarah Lees doing well in her debut race finishing 188th. Anna Helsing was next home in 213th followed closely by Tania Miranda in 224th.

On a short visit to Wales from Adelaide, Australia, former member Joanne Davies ran as a guest for the club and finished well in 241st position. Sarah Pope was next in 251st, Clare O'Reilly and Judy Maragna both finished very strongly in 267th and 280th positions. All ladies gained valuable points to put Penarth and Dinas Ladies in tenth place in Division 1.

In the Men's race, four large laps and a very strong field of 476 finishers, Richard Jackson-Hookins, retaining his great form led the men home in 76th position followed by Ben Butler-Madden in 93rd, a big improvement from the previous race, Andy Jones looked strong all the way round and finished next in 257th, followed closely by new comer to the club Gavin Evans 277th.

Clem Clement did very well coming back from injury to finish in 288th followed by Marc Durkin 314th and Chris Nellins 321st.

Chris Seal, also back from injury, had a good run to finish 360th, followed by Jonathan Lee 384th, Peter Balmont 443th and Cameron Large, who looked like he enjoyed the experience in 453rd. All Penarth and Dinas men did very well to gain valuable points to keep the men in strong contention for promotion to Division 2, finishing second in Division 3.

The next Gwent League race will be held at Blaise Castle, Bristol on December 5.
