PENARTH athlete Brett Morse will be competing at the Welsh Championships on Saturday, June 11 at Cardiff International Sports Campus.

Morse, British number one in discus, will be eager to get closer to his personal best of 66.84 following a recent pec injury.

Morse set his PB in 2013 and is hoping to reach the Rio Olympic qualifying distance of 65.00 at the championships.

Coached by Nigel Bevan, he will also be competing against British number two Zane Duquemin (John Hillier) in the event

There will around 350 athletes competing in a variety of competitions on the day in the hope of becoming Welsh Champion.

Also competing will be current Welsh Champion, Sam Gordon and training partner Dewi Hammond (Matt Elias) who will go head to head for the title of fastest man in Wales in the 100m alongside recent GB Junior representative Kristian Jones (Helen Patricia James), the latter two will also meet again in the 200 metres.

After a fantastic run at Loughborough International Owen Smith (Elias) will be looking for yet another PB in the 400m. He will be up against European Youth hopeful Joe Brier (Neal Merry).

Jake Heyward (Paul Darney) is the one to beat in the 800m, Heyward already has the European Youth qualifying mark to his name and will not want to let go of his Welsh Champion title. There will be good competition in the 1500m between defending Champion Tom Marshall (James Thie), Ieuan Thomas (Thie) and Guy Smith (George Edwards), all will be in contention for places at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

A Welsh all-comers record indoor was the catalyst to springboard Chris Baker (Sharon Heveren) to be ranked number two in the world when he cleared 2.36, he is entered in the high jump against up and coming Welshman Jonathan Bailey (Stephen Bailey)

Commonwealth Games athlete Gareth Winter will compete in the shotput and after being only 30cm shy of the Welsh Record Osian Jones (Dennis Roscoe) is the one to watch in the hammer throw.

The competition in the women’s 100m is a fierce one as Swansea Harrier and recent GB Junior gold medallist Hannah Brier (Neal Merry) will be looking to add another win to her name, she will be challenged for the title of Welsh Champion by Rachel Johncock (Leon Baptiste) and Mica Moore (Lawrence Moore). Brier and Moore will also go head to head in the 200m.

Distance runners Melissa Courtney (Mark Pauley) and Julia Cooke (Bud Baldaro) will meet again on the track for the 1500m while in the 800m Katherine Marshall (Thie) who’s represented New Zealand in the Commonwealth Games will be racing. Race Walker Bethan Davies (Andi Drake) will be going for gold in the 3km walk.

In the shot put, current Welsh Champion Adele Nicol (Vladimir Zinchenko/Adrian Palmer) will be targeting the podium top spot, while 2010 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Carys Parry (Adrian Palmer) will be up against Scottish International Rachel Hunter (Henry Hunter) in the hammer throw.

After a good start to the outdoor season, Glasgow Commonwealth Games Medallist Sally Peake (Scott Simpson) is up in the pole vault, Peake is another athlete looking for Olympic qualification.

The 2016 Welsh Athletics Championships take place at the Cardiff International Sports Campus. Gates open at 10.30am, with the first track final set to take place at 1.30pm.
