AS WALES fly the flag in Euro 2016 the youngsters from Dinas Wolves have been doing the same in tournaments over the bridge in the past two months.

In the SCI tournament in Brean Sands in May the Vale players managed to go two days unbeaten and narrowly lost out in the final to the Nomads who fielded no less than seven academy players from the Southampton FC Bath Satellite Academy and Bristol City FC.

The boys performed brilliantly for the two days and were well supported by their families who certainly enjoyed the four day break.

Last weekend Wolves travelled the short distance to Yate FC for their annual tournament which hosts 18 teams in this age group.

Dinas entered two teams and after successful group stages both teams made it through to the knock-outs.

In the group stages Jake Frost led his team to three wins and two loses with Joe Doughty, Rian Thomas and Robson Mallam amongst the goalscorers.

They faced Heavitree Youth in the quarter-finals and after Rian Thomas had struck the post in the opening minutes the game turned into a very tight affair with very little between the teams.

The English team had the next chance and it was to be their only chance but it was enough to send them through. Quest, O'Brien, Kelly, and Webb all put in a great performance for the Vale team as they were unlucky to go out at this stage.

Meanwhile the other Dinas side had been quietly going about their business, not losing a match in the group stages as Perria, Harewood, Fifield and skipper Booker had produced goals to see them through to the quarter-finals. Here they faced Bradley Stoke, a late winner from Booker was enough to put them in the semi-finals.

With a 20 minute break and time to refuel team from Wolves, supported by the whole squad, put on a five star performance beating the hosts 5-0 to book a place in the final. Scorers Harewood, Booker, Perria, Lewis and T Williams.

Having watched Mangotsfield throughout the day they knew they were going to have to pull out a big performance to win. The crowds gathered around the pitch to watch a very tense game.

Within three minutes the Vale team had fallen behind. Harewood came very close moments later, Lewis fired a rocket of a volley which the 'keeper tipped over before Booker broke free and coolly slotted home the equaliser.

Fifield, Williams and Perria defended with such authority for the midfield to have a base to attack from. The game went into extra time but Wolves couldn't find the the breakthrough so it was down to penalties.

The stage was set, best of three then sudden death. Jake Lewis showed a cool head placing his penalty low and hard to the 'keepers right to put the Vale team one up, then Dylan Morris pulled off a superb save to put Dinas in the driving sit.

Harewood rifled his penalty in to put the pressure on the Magotsfield big centre back who blasted his penalty over. The squad from Dinas all piled on the hero of the hour Dylan Morris as Wolves managed to win the tournament.

This rounded off a great day by the whole squad and parents who all showed a togetherness rarely seen at junior level.
