PENARTH Bowling Club have enjoyed another successful week, with just a single reversal in the six matches played.

On Wednesday, August 3, in the Munro Cup match at Murch BC, it proved to be too tough a challenge and, despite the best efforts of the one successful rink of Terry Buckingham, Guy Thomas, Rob Grant and skip Colin Grant (20-8), a close match ended in a single shot reversal overall.

Thursday marked the visit of Cardiff Masonic for a friendly which Penarth duly won by seven shots overall. Top performers were Haydn Trow with Nick Thomas, George Mackie and Russell Daniel (22-13) and a 16-10 win for Brian Knight, Reg Jones, Brian Hocking and skip Roger Gidman ensured victory for the home side.

Saturday’s PG1 match saw a big improvement in fortunes with maximum points gained in the home match with Sully Sports and a huge 108 - 46 winning score line.

There were solid wins for Clive Fry (25-19) and Nick Thomas (17-14) and a splendid 22 - 9 victory for Mike Conway, Don Shirley, Bob Horne and skip Nick Chandler but top honours went to Colin Grant, who, with the help of Terry Buckingham, Rob Grant and Dave Clements, sailed home by 39 shots to nine.

The PG2 side seems to be going from strength to strength at the moment and Saturday saw yet another excellent performance, this time away at Guest Memorial, where the 10 points gained consolidated Penarth’s position at the top of the division.

Haydn Trow with Colin Hicks, Mike England and Berwyn Lansley produced a 27-12 win and Dave Hilldrup plus Dave Holdaway, Trevor Jenkins and Neil Gaskell battled bravely to go down by only three shots.

However, the win was sealed by a virtuoso performance from skip Bob Hill, who, with good support from John Whitfield, Brian Knight and Ron Birkby ran out convincing winners by 32 - 15.

Incidentally, team members noted that Haydn’s car arrived at Dowlais 30 minutes after the rest. Has he taken over from Ron in running “scenic tours” of the valleys?

Congratulations to the ladies who have successfully reached the play-off stage of the Evening League by securing top spot in their section with last week’s big win over Mackintosh(54-20).

Top performers were Chris Church, a happy captain Sue Croll, Kath Jenkins and skip Belinda Price (33-9) whilst Chris Davies, Jill Gaskell, Wendy Grant and Joyce Allen (21-11) were always in command.

The Afternoon League game against Llantwit Major was a closer affair but victories on two rinks guaranteed the 14 shot overall winning scoreline. A good win for skip Sue Croll with Norma Duggan, Barbara Brown and Wendy Grant (21-18) and a comprehensive 27 - 12 win for Kath Jenkins, Jayne Edwards, Lynda Williams and Chris Church put the issue beyond doubt.
