IT HAS been an impressive week for Windsor Bowls Club men's section after they beat the Private Greens League leaders and won the Munro Cup.

In the Private Greens League a truly David versus Goliath match took place when Dinas Powys, currently top of the league and rightly recognised as one of the best, came to Windsor, who newly promoted were propping up the table.

Even the most enthusiastic Windsor supporters could never have imagined what occurred; as having already lost earlier in the season to Dinas by a cricket score, the Windsor bowlers by producing their very best form, sent the Dinas men home with their tails between their legs, by winning on two rinks, drawing on one and losing on the other.

Leading the Windsor charge was international star Matthew Woodcock’s rink and the consistent Steve Close four. The never changing captain Richard Flitney's rink, skipped by chief selector Ken McLeod fought manfully to tie their game, while the rink of Tony Holmes continues in their quest to record the most shots lost in one season.

HC Lewis, P Gooding, E Thorne, M Woodcock: 36 - 26

A Morgan, P Morrish, R Hudson, S Close: 25 - 16

M Matthews, D Rees, R Flitney, K McLeod: 18 - 18

S Ellard, C Burton, P Gunter, T Holmes: 15 - 19

Windsor 94, Dinas Powys 79.

The following Wednesday saw the final matches in The Munro Cup. The two unbeaten teams being the current holders Barry Romilly who took on the high-flying Flitney’s 16.

The Munro Cup, originated by Jock and Maisie Munro of Windsor, have just received a new trophy donated by Don and Mary Stafford of Windsor.

In the closely fought game, the lead changed hands many times over the 18 ends.

The 'A48' Morgan and Dave 'silent assassin' Hudson starred for skip Steve Close, while Glamorgan county lead and Lona Thomas’ hero Charles Burton and the Krankie’s Steve Ellard shone in the Holmes four.

Typical of club commitment, was the sacrifice of the Pallbearer’s four who forsook such duties, and its remuneration, for the team. They were also assisted by Eddie Thorne, who, playing two rinks away, put his wood on their jack on three wrong-bias draws.

M Matthews, B Rogers, R Flitney, K McLeod: 19 - 16
