BARRY Island parkrun will host a 5km running event on Saturday, August 27 to get more people active in the community and to celebrate Team GB's achievements at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

The event is part of I Am Team GB - a nationwide campaign that has inspired thousands of UK clubs to open their doors to new participants. This campaign is brought to you by ITV and The National Lottery, working with the British Olympic Association, UK Sport and supported by Join In, to inspire the Great British public to take part in sport.

What's more, many of the nation's Olympians, fresh from the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, will be attending events across the nation to give people the opportunity to stand shoulder to shoulder with members of Team GB.

Barry Island parkun is proud to fly the I Am Team GB flag in the Vale of Glamorgan.

“We are really pleased to put on this great event and be part of I Am Team GB”, said co-event directors, Lyn Evans and Ian Thorne.

“We believe that our parkrun brings the community closer together while supporting an active lifestyle and personal development through volunteering”, they added.

Barry Island parkrun is a free timed 5km run that takes place at 9am every Saturday morning at Barry Island promenade, near the beach huts. It’s open to anyone of any ability and the organisers are hoping to attract even more runners, joggers and walkers than usual for this special event.

If you’re thinking of joining I Am Team GB and the parkrun community, then just register with parkrun (parkrun.org.uk/register), print a personal barcode and come along on Saturday morning.
