PENARTH Bowling Club’s Private Greens matches ended on something of a flat note with two defeats in last Saturday’s games. However, there was some cheer in the mid-week encounters with wins in the Alliance and friendly games.

Tuesday’s visit to Barry Romilly in the Alliance on September 6 brought little success with defeats on all three rinks in a 30 - 52 reversal, though Dave Holdaway, Ken Brinkworth, Dave Ingram and skip Bob Willmott came close with a 13 - 16 loss.

There were better fortunes for the friendly against Fairoak on Wednesday, September 7, when wins on three of the four rinks produced a 70 - 41 victory. Top rink was skipped by Dave Plank, who, aided by Trevor Jenkins, Mike England and Berwyn Lansley won 25 - 7. Also well to the fore was Derrick Musk, who, with Lawrence Brooke, Claudio Gent and Ron Birkby ended 18 - 7 ahead. A solid win for the Nick Thomas four sealed the success.

Friday, September 9, saw the annual encounter between the Alliance team and Rectory Road Ladies. Over the years this fixture has been given added interest by the prospect of earning valuable 'bragging rights' to say nothing of the prospect of the extra edge provided by the prospect of matrimonial friction.

In the event, a very keen match resulted in a 14 shot victory for the men with the three successful rinks headed by Bob Lewis, Haydn Trow, Ken Brinkworth and Trevor Jenkins (17-10). With Joan Lewis on the opposing rink the club can only speculate as to whether Bob got any supper that night.

The end of the PG1 series saw Penarth pay a fruitless visit to Rhiwbina where there was defeat on all four rinks in a 41 shot overall loss. Penarth can only look forward to re-grouping and a fresh start in 2017.

Things have gone very well for Russell Daniel’s PG2 side with promotion assured and a very real prospect of winning the PG2 Second Division outright, but Saturday was something of an anti-climax with a narrow nine shot defeat to a useful Rhiwbina team, and, sadly defeat on three rinks.

Top performers on the day were Berwyn Lansley, Alan Stockham, Colin Hicks and skip Haydn Trow with a well-earned 24 - 18 win.
