ON SUNDAY, September 18, the ladies of Dinas Powys Lawn Tennis Club came out in the warm sunshine to play in the Ruth Tamlyn Tournament.

Ruth was a vibrant member of the club from 1967 until her death after a short illness in 1990. Her brother gave two trophies in her memory for what has become a very popular annual ladies tournament.

The tournament was established to bring together all ladies of the club – both team and social players, something about which Ruth was very passionate. The club's thanks go to Margaret James who was so instrumental in organising the event, and also to former president Jean Williams, and current president Nan Thomas who came to present the trophies.

All three of these ladies played in the club teams with Ruth, and were among her closest friends.

The winners of this special tournament were Sammy Vowles and Mary Bray, with Freda Emery and Margaret James being runners-up.

Before the tournament, the club held the Keith Hudson Quiz Night in the evening of Saturday, September 17.

Many tables of eight very intelligent and knowledgeable members and guests of the club turned up, to battle their wits against each other.

The quiz ran for more than two hours with three different sets of questions from the quizmaster and everyone agreed that it was a fantastic evening.

The winning team on the evening was called Al's Pals, they beat all the other teams by some distance, in fact you could have called 'game, set and match' after round two, but the opposition battled on till the end, hoping for a slip from Al's Pals.

Incidentally they have now won this event three times on the bounce and get to keep the trophy, which is a gnome.
