LAST week saw the final seven days of outdoor bowling at Rectory Road with three wins and one loss recorded for Penarth Bowling Club.

Saturday, September 17, saw Penarth welcome Bridgewater BC for a mixed friendly in which the visitors narrowly prevailed after a keenly fought match. Top performers for Penarth were Russell Daniel, Sandra Roberts, Barbara Brown and skip Dave Dalby with a 25 - 13 scoreline.

A narrow win for Bob Willmott was not quite enough to swing the issue however.

Sunday’s two rink triples match with Arriva Trains saw both sides take one rink but it was the visitors who produced the superior score with a narrow four shot win. Top performers for Penarth were Berwyn Lansley, Reg Jones and Bob Willmott 21 - 14.

Close friends and neighbours, Belle Vue were Wednesday’s visitors for the Les Heap trophy game. This time it was the Rectory Road men who called the shots with a 60 - 35 overall win and 12 points.

Skip Dave Clements with the help of Don Shirley and Alan Stockham (18 - 6) led the way and, with good wins for Dave Plank, Bob Willmott and Phil Davies (18 - 7) and Roger Gidman, Derrick Musk and Brian Brennan (17 - 9) victory was sealed.

On Thursday Penarth played Penarth Windsor in the final match of the Les Heap series. This time, things went the way of Rectory Road thanks to wins for Dave Dalby, Roger Gidman and Derrick Musk (21 - 10) Bob Hill, Guy Thomas and Phil Davies (16 - 11) and Mike England, Dave Hilldrup and Brian Brennan (13 - 12).

Friday night saw the final of the Friday Triples KO competition between the Moaners (Dave Hilldrup, Bob Horne and Dave Clements) and the Untouchables (Phil Davies, Berwyn Lansley and Bob Hill) after a tight start to the game - it was 5 - 4 to the Moaners at seven ends - the wheels came off for the Untouchables as Dave’s men chalked up 14 shots to the opposition’s one to end up convincing winners.

Finally, president Nick Chandler is reported to be non-plussed by the suggestion in last week’s Penarth Times by the 'venerable Edwin', scribe of the Windsor that he is actually older than Ron Birkby.

Most people in the local bowling world would find it hard to believe that there is anyone older than Ron.
