PENARTH Bowling Club’s Indoor season got underway over the past two weeks with two home wins and a defeat in the only away game of the campaign.

The opening match saw Penarth welcome close friends and neighbours, Murch Bowling Club to Rectory Road. In a competitive match, the home side ran out victorious due in no small measure to the emphatic win by Colin Grant’s rink where Colin, ably backed up by Dave Ingram, Russell Daniel and Mike England chalked up a 23 shot winning margin.

With Nick Thomas, Trevor Jenkins, Laurie Brooke and Guy Thomas (19-8) and Dave Dalby, Berwyn Lansley, Derrick Musk and Phil Davies (19-11) also well in command the issue was settled. Special mention must be made of the winning Murch rink of Roger Mauchline, C Savidge, Geoff Lane and Dave Poole, who staged a remarkable comeback to turn a 3 - 10 deficit into a 20 - 13 win with some consistently high class bowling.

Sunday, October 30, saw Cowbridge visiting Penarth for a mixed four rink match. Here the visitors gave a very good account of themselves with close results on three rinks but the issue was put beyond doubt mainly due to a totally dominant performance by Chris Davies, Sandra Whitfield, Phil Davies and skip Bob Hill.

There were winning rinks also for Bob Lewis (20-15), Alan Stockham (19-17) and Reg Jones (19-15) to round off a very pleasant afternoon.

On Wednesday, November 2, the club made their annual trip to Rhiwbina. This always proves to be a tough challenge as the restricted indoor green there is just over half the length of Rectory Road and this, combined with some rather arcane local rules and the extreme competitiveness of the home team, conspired to stack the odds against Penarth in this two session four rink triples.

In the event the forebodings of the visitors were laid to rest as Penarth far from disgraced themselves in a modest overall defeat. The highlight was, without doubt, a substantial win for Laurie Brooke, Tony Thomas and Dave Ingram, who were more than a match for the home three on this occasion.

Incidentally the team member who described the proceedings as “like trying to roll conkers down a snooker table” shall remain anonymous.
