SATURDAY saw the Vale Schools Under-15s travel to Bangor for their first away match of the season, against RGC Schools West.

The game kicked off slightly later than anticipated, to allow the pitch to properly thaw, RGC won the toss and changed ends, hoping to benefit from the low winter sun in the eyes of the Vale.

However, it wasn’t long before wing Matt Oddy crossed the line for the Vale’s first try, converted by Ioan Cooper. A second try from Tom Ap John swiftly followed, again converted by Ioan.

The Vale’s domination began to show with Benji Williams soaring to take RGC’s line out ball. The forwards took the ball on before Lewys Williams darted over the line for the third try, 19 – 0

The fourth try was a gem, RGC attacked deep into the Vale half before the ball was turned over and wing forward Iestyn Galton shot down the wing to score under the posts.

The half-time score was 26 – 0.

The second half began with the Vale playing with the sun at their backs, playing some lovely expansive rugby.

They extended their lead with two tries from Benji Williams, the second of which saw the number eight cross the line carrying a RGC defender.

Prop Christian Brooke scored the seventh try running in from the 10 metre line, Ioan Cooper converting.

The final two tries came from the Vale wingers.

Powerful running from Will Hardy who scored on the left converted by Cooper, then another from the mercurial Jake Thomas scoring on the right.

With the final try taking the Vale over 50 points the referee signalled the end of the game.

The team wish to thank the parents and coaches for their support, and to sponsor Apricot Online and Bangor RFC and RGC for their hospitality, good luck to them for the rest of the season.

Thanks also to Liza Williams for her match photography.

The Vale’s next game is a local derby against Cardiff Schools on December 11.
