PENARTH Bowling Club’s Jason Greenslade has added yet another trophy to his already highly impressive record by winning the recent Men's Pairs title at Potters Resort in Norfolk in partnership with the highly-regarded Les Gillet, an English international and former World Indoor Singles champion.

The Indoor Championships at Potters, which feature on national TV, are an annual feature in January and represent the pinnacle of World Indoor events featuring all of the top ranked players, so, to come away with a world title is an achievement worthy of the highest possible acclaim in the sport.

After battling their way through the earlier rounds, Jason and his partner found themselves up against an all Welsh pairing of Damien Doublar and Daniel Salmon, two of the brightest up-and-coming stars of the bowling world with Daniel, incidentally, a former junior member of the Penarth Rectory Road Club.

This young pair had already seen off some serious competition in the earlier rounds and Jason and Les had no illusions as to the toughness of the opposition they faced.

As expected, the final more than lived up to expectations with the the crowd enthralled by the high quality of bowling throughout.

After trailing in the first set Jason and his partner pulled out all the stops to gain a tight seven all draw to give them a slim advantage but their young opponents were far from fazed and continued to produce some excellent bowling for which Jason and Les needed all their skill and experience to counter.

The final end produced one of the best finishes ever seen in a final at Potters.

Daniel and Damien were lying shot and in a match winning position. Jason drove and missed with his penultimate wood and, facing the same situation with the very last wood of the game, proceeded to draw the shot to give him and Les the title of World Indoor Pairs Champions 2017.

Jason described the moments in which he walked back to the mat to deliver his final bowl as stretching his mental resources to the full.

He said that he attempted to drive all other thoughts from his mind and focus fully on that final delivery.

What helped him through it ultimately was to think of his devoted parents Roy and Marilyn (both fine bowlers themselves) and of all the loving care and support they had given him through all of his life and, in the event, this gave him the strength to believe in himself after three previous final appearances in the pairs in which he finished runner-up.

Everyone at Penarth Bowling Club and indeed the local bowling community, sends Jason their heartiest congratulations on this remarkable achievement.

To have a World Champion and one of the top 16 bowlers in the world living locally reflects highly on the sporting talent in Penarth and brings great credit to the town.

Well done Jason and the very best of luck in the future.
