SULLY Indoor Bowls Club have had a poor season by previous years standards as many of the top players automatically selected for the Stadium Team chose not too play, creating a shortage of experienced and good bowlers.

Thankfully other club members came forward enabling the games to be played and gaining experience needed to compete at the necessary level but the team were not strong enough to compete.

Fortunately, the Stadium Team were able to fulfil all fixtures and hopefully maintain their existing status for next season. The main issue with the Stadium Team is a lack of younger players and this will remain a problem until the club are able attract younger players.

The Senior Side (O’60s) have shown tremendous consistency over the years finishing at the top of their league on numerous occasions, only failing to win the Welsh Championship Shield after qualifying for the quarter and semi-finals over this period.

This year though the O’60’s side proved they were capable of taking on and competing with the best senior teams in Wales by qualifying for the final against Selwyn from Llanelli to be played in Cynon Valley.

The Sully Players were in confident mood but apprehensive as they have been defeated by Selwyn in previous years.

Sully got off to a good start leading by six shots after five ends with only Dave Curtis’ rink behind by three shots.

At the end of the tenth Sully were playing confident bowls and had moved to a 15 shot lead with 38 – 23. The rink of Brian Foscolo, G Cogbill, Mike Doyle and Steve Close were leading the way with a seven shot advantage and Curtis’ rink of Andrew Harvey, Mel Newman, Peter Hocking came from behind to take a two shot lead.

As the game progressed towards the 15th end Sully were playing excellently across all rinks with Foscolo’s and Curtis’ rinks taking command of their opponents and Brian Griffiths’ rink of Alan Bryan, Phil Gershenson and Fred Phillips also in brilliant form, it was captain Mcleod’s rink left having a good battle with their opponents but leading by three.

With the overall score standing at 69 – 40 the game was now Sully’s to lose but this was their day and they maintained their form to the last ends.

All Sully rinks won with McLeod’s rink of Gerry White, Chas Burton and Rod Hudson staving off the strong Selwyn four to win by four shots to guarantee a comfortable 31 shot victory for Sully 95 – 64.

Congratulations to all the squad on their performances throughout an unbeaten season.
