IT WAS A DIFFICULT afternoon for Penarth Cricket Club's first team as they were well beaten at home.

They took on Ynysygerwn at the Athletic Ground on Saturday (July 8) with the visitors choosing to bat first after winning the toss.

Ynysygerwn made 246-9 from their 50 overs with Scott Thornton starring with an unbeaten 61.

The pick of the Penarth bowlers was Scott Matthews with 3-25 from five overs.

In reply, Penarth were bowled out for 88 in the 25th over of their innings.

Ali Bukkhari top scored for the bears with 37 in a difficult afternoon which saw Richard Grant pick up impressive figures of 4-19 from seven overs as Ynysygerwn ran out winners by 158 runs.

The second team were also beaten as they travelled to play Tata Steel.

Penarth won the toss and asked their hosts to bat first.

Tata Steel reached 189-8 from their 50 overs with Mark Donovan top scoring with 44 as Andy Graveson (2-38), Will Skone (2-30) and John Tose (2-27) led the way with the ball for the bears.

Penarth were bowled out for 183 in the penultimate over despite the efforts of Jamie Hitchen who hit 55.

Tata Steel ran out winners by two wickets in a tight game.

The thirds had better fortune as they ran out winners at home to Pontnewynydd.

The bears won the toss and opted to field first at the Athletic Ground.

Penarth bowled out their visitors for 179 in the 39th over as Geraint Jones led the run scoring with 42 as Ishtiyaq Akhtar's took 3-25 and Neil Stephens 3-37.

Penarth knocked the runs off with three balls to spare with Neil Stephens top scoring with 44.

The fourth team recorded an impressive win away at Croesyceiliog having been put into bat first.

Penarth smashed 176-2 from their 40 overs with David Carter hitting 78 and Nick Viner 71 as they put on 150 for the first wicket.

Penarth bowed their hosts out for just 98 in the 27th over with Rhys Woolmer's 3-18 and an incredible 3-4 from the captain Andrew Prickett seeing Penarth home for a 78 run win.

This weekend the first team travels away to play Bridgend Town and the seconds hosts Bridgend Town.

The thirds are away at Christchurch whilst the fourths host Christchurch
