JUST like the busses they never come one at a time for Sully Bowls Club

Yes, just after going to press last week Doug Hotchkiss Dave Curtis and Brian Griffiths won a second county title for the over 60s triples to add to the open triples which was won with Carl Best in for Doug. This is a great honour for our small club and the men now go to the national finals at the end of August. The club side had mixed fortunes this week, on Wednesday they travelled to Cadoxton on a grey night but stayed dry. On the green it was only the rink of Steve Norris, Albert Kelly, Huw Thomas and Trevor Murphy who got a great last bowl draw for our only point.

On Thursday night two rinks played at a poor Dinas Powys green against Barry Athletic in the semi final of the Alun Martin with one one rink up it was not enough to avoid a loss against a good side.

The week's important fixture was Saturday at home to Fairoaks to whom Sully lost at the start of the season and points where needed. Across the green it was a really great good humoured game and at ten ends the home side where behind by ten shots. Much against some recent performances everyone knuckled down and turned it around.

After 15 ends we where ten up and went on to win by 27 with three rinks up giving a very good 12 points.

The rink of John Hubbard, John Best, Doug Hotchkiss and Carl Best were four down at half way but won 23-16. The Andy Smith, Eddie Pryer, Mike Hardy and Brian Griffiths rink where 11 behind at half way and right to the last end where they took a three to win 17-16.

Garth John, Doug Curtin, Alen Thomas and Dave Curtis where always behind but kept it tight and only lost by two 14-16.

The heroes on the day, not counting the wrong bias bowled by a well known umpire, were Ben Curtis Alun Rees Trevor Murphy and Dennis Edwards.

Right from the of all four bowled well as a rink with good communication and understanding of what was needed.

At half way Sully were eight up and finished 20 up at 30-10 this led to a 84-57 win and great points.

This week is a friendly on Wednesday at home to Millwood and on Saturday a tough away game in Llantwit Major who are top of the league.
